Value reduction with new paint?

I have a pani base model, however I like the paint on both the tri and R models. My question is will the value of the bike depreciate by adding either the tricolor or R paint scheme?

I'd say yes, it will decrease the value (definitely won't increase the value), because most people will see it as a "he's trying to fool us into thinking he has an R or a Tricolore" effort vs. "he just really likes the aesthetics." Kind of like putting an M3 badge on a 3 series....not as shameless, but kind of in the same ballpark.

If you're going to go through all the trouble (and expense) of turning your base into an R-or Tri-looking bike, you might just want to consider going balls-to-the-wall and get a full on RR Carbon fairing kit from Bellissimoto.

Or come up with something unique and tasteful that WILL appeal to someone come time of resale, who thinks, "damn, I LOVE that paint scheme."

Great to see someone in Alaska rocking an 1199!

Judging by the current resale of base bikes no it won't hurt your resale as the resale is already poop to begin with lol.

If you do a trade in it may depreciate, private sale? umm not sure but you can get whatever someone is willing to pay for it. If I saw two base side by side for sale and all things were equal except one was painted like the Tri I would pay a few bucks more for the paint job as long as you didn't rebadge it with an S. I did mine in carbon Tri but didn't rebadge it to an S.

I would do what Antihero suggested and give it a touch of cf here and there.

I would not pay more for a bike with a custom paint job. People get hung up on that thinking there is more value.

Thanks for the input! Yes I'd like to add flair. I saw someone do the carbonvani with a tricolor scheme, which I was thinking about. But I also think it would be sweet to do the same with the R paint. Have cf instead of white.

And as others have said, not trying to fool anyone into thinking its something it's not. Just adding some more flair to an already incredible bike.

Thanks everyone for the responses!!

if a bike had paint work, custom or not, i would assume it had been down and i would not consider it for purchase.

I think it's ok to personalize it, but not ok to make it a replica of another model (example of base painted to look like S, R or Tri). Really depends on the buyer who happens to want it at that time though as far as value.

+1

There are some awesome paint concepts out there and some talented designers just waiting to add to that pool to repaint and just copy a factory scheme is a opportunity missed !

Just do what makes you happy. It's a toy not an investment.

+1.

As a very wise person (recently) said to me regarding Ducatis, the vintage classics are really the only ones that appreciate in value.

There are some awesome CF bodywork out there such as Scrapper Xs carbon tricolore bodywork, or the carbonvani RR, etc or even get it custom painted. There are plenty of wicked panigale versions all over this forum, take design cues from them.

Don't let the opinions of would be / could be / should be future buyers influence you, get what YOU think is cool.

Ding Ding - Give this man a prize! :)

I hate to be a Debbie Downer or jinx us but truth be told (taking a sample from this forum) most of us probably would lay our bikes down before we sell it anyways. So don't worry about value. Enjoy it while we have it. Even the greatest professionals lay their bikes down over and over.
