Using this tool, is it correct in stating that I should be able to measure all 4 points for valve clearance?

Or must I not use this tool and rotate the motor to find rest for each of the 4 points.

Confused as the measurements I’m getting are kinda out to lunch from what I expected to see on such a young motor.

You don’t use it for the shim check
Thank you, can you elaborate on proper shim check. Manual is not clear.

Is it correct to say “put exhaust open and close lobes at rest, take measurements. Then rotate motor till intake open and close lobes are at rest, measure. Repeat for opposing head?

I thought when the mounting holes for that tool were both facing up, both intake and exhaust were at rest for the entire head?

With the camshaft stroke checking tool installed, the cylinder head has effectively been placed in the service position. Look closely at the cylinder head with the tool installed... the valves are at rest (fully closed). The cam lobes are not acting upon them. You can take clearance measurements in the position you've shown. Alternatively, with the camshaft stroke checking tool removed, you can rotate the crank and position the camshafts as shown in the shop manual (opening cam lobes pointing straight up when measuring intake clearances, long flat side of closing cam running parallel to the top of the cylinder head when measuring exhaust clearances). In either case, the measured values should be the same as the valves are at rest in both instances. For clarification, the camshaft stroke checking tool isn't a necessity when measuring clearances. It's typically used prior to installing the tool in the crankshaft port which holds the corresponding piston at TDC. Visit YouTube and take a look at "Breaking It Down, The 1199 Files, Valve Adjustment" for additional information.

Khmer199, thanks for the clarification. Those tools came in the engine tool set but i didn't think to use the cam lock tool when checking the shims. Excellent clarification

Exactly the response I was needing. Thank you. I re watched the breaking it down video last night and realized about the opening lobes facing up. Just heading into the shop now to try again that way and see if the numbers fall closer into place.
thanknyou.

As a side note... if you intend to place the cam lobes straight up when checking opening clearances, when you check the exhaust opening clearances on either the vertical or horizontal cylinder head, the valve decompressor at the end of the exhaust camshaft is acting on the exhaust valve closest to the decompressor. The decompressor arm will have to be positioned, and held, full throw in order to insert a gauge between the cam lobe and shoe.
