For pictures of this go to this link where I posted it I cant seem to post pictures here like before, I think its important info for all Pani owners.

Preparing the bike for the track I was bothered by a small coating of oil around the bottom front of the timing cover, I dont use the bike much and it was nothing much but I didn't want to go on the track with it just in case, so to start the job drain the oil, as the oil is brand new the kitchen saucepan was the best for cleanness, found bits, light brown plastic, l figured thats the gears for the water pump, anyway got the cover off and the idle gear to the water pump has started to disintegrate, looks to me that the teeth have no substance behind them, so when the skin breaks thats it.
This bike has about 4k miles on it its 2012 reg in 13, lucky for me I found a oil leak that bothered me, if the gear fully went the pump would stop and with the Pani there is no time to stop a catastrophic overheat and seize up, problem is oil change times are quiet long and as I said this is new oil and when I drained it 10 miles ago there was nothing in the oil, only way to check this is to remove the timing cover and look, but see the photos it cannot be just one has this problem.
Also there is normally a reason for this stuff to fail, but this is just bad quality, pump is fine, water pump gear is fine just this idle gear failed.

I'm sure that I have seen something somewhere about an upgrade in the plastic gear parts but am damned if I can recall where.
A friend of mine had the same failure while racing and lost the engine. The remains were only good for random spares.

they say the BSB teams use metal.

So what's the fix? Are you switching to metal gear? How to get by one of those?

I would like metal ones, however I think that this is just the odd bad gear, if you look closely a the tooth you can see the inside is porous and if you look at the bottom tooth which is still whole you can see the outer of the tooth cracking up. there are thousands of 899s, 1199s 959s 1299 that have done thousands of miles and are OK, its not a panic they are all going to go but if like me you are the unlucky few then look out for the parts bill, and the trouble is to check this isnt so easy, who wants to take the side of a engine just to have a look, Im glad they piss oil out everywhere so I had a reason to go in!

Time for some therapeutic work for my mind, plastic gears looking good here.
Seems like a fragile construction but what do i know..
And yes, found the mystical plastic pieces at last in the oil sump!

Worth to check if you can after what I found, I reported it to Ducati and asked them to pay for the gears as it only did 7500km, you can guess what I got, its not the money it was about 80 euros for the gears but .... I was near to losing the motor.
