Water pump replacement

Starting in 2021 IIRC. I don't know what the changes were though.

They changed the outer seal the one behind the weep hole. Lowered the seal face load. This allows the pump to only leak to the outside when the seal gets overwhelmed by cooling system pressure instead of inside into the oil. This is revision one. Revision 2 adds plumbing (hose barb) to the weep hole and a hose and a catch can of sorts. If I had a bike older than a 21 I'd be changing the pump. When I put mine back together (a 21) I'm going to drop the radiator cap blow off a couple of PSI.

Ok, I do recall seeing that change with the added tube. I think that was a 2023 thing. I saw someone drill and tap for a barb in a YouTube video when they were repairing a crashed bike. If I ever have occasion to take my air box off I’d likely do the same.

@shade any chance you took any photos of the water pump or opened it up?

What could cause these water pump failures? Could using too much RTV cause a blockage which then causes increased coolant pressure or is it just bad design?

The fix is to increase the pump shaft diameter. That changes the force distribution across the face of the seal relative to the shaft. Then the cooling system wouldn't over whelm the seal. This would require a change to the pump drive gears and possibly the pump housing itself (to increase the dia. of the nose support material). The pump housing was already hard tooled and they probably had a bunch in WIP when the field failures rose to a level that they understood they had a design flaw. So they band aided it. Typical corporate BS. Gear change might require a new noise homologation if they couldn't hide the change from the regulatory agencies. So It'll be fixed with the next motor redesign.

Even the "newer" design failed me after 9 months, I do ride a lot out in the desert though, and don't hold back any even if its 110+ out XD. Fingers crossed #3 holds up longer. If anyone is going to change theirs, make sure to get new case bolts, they are light as .... aluminum and are meant to be one time use, maybe 2. Definitely not 3, don't ask me how I know.

I refuse to allow my bike to see any more than 3 bars. When the fourth bar lights if I can't immediately get it to cool down I shut the motor off. At some point I figured out the bar transition points relative to temperature so I have no desire to reverse the heat treat on the heads. The stock radiator cap opens way up there pressure wise. So a lower pressure cap will help I suspect.

Yeah, no choice when racing, it's yelled "HIGH" at me for 6 laps before lol. Tried the Graves 2.0 cap, same ..... Got Motul "MoCool" in there now vs Cool Aide which I find to be too powdery and cakes when blown out for lack of a better word, cant use glycol based coolants. VP makes a non glycol coolant, might try that.

Here's one from the Fall.

This is not a cheap part, plus the sundries like coolant and sealant etc. An expensive change once, let alone twice.

Would the coolant remain under high pressure or possibly spike when the bike is turned off? Maybe the new fan strategy tries to mitigate this. Fans on my 22 turn on at 3 bars and I've yet to see 4 bars even during 100+º track day sessions.

At the track and at home, I've started to spray the radiator down with water mist and get a fan on the bike after hearing about the GPS going off due to heat. Works a treat. You'll see GP and WSBK mechs doing this too.

After pulling in at the track on my s1000 I’ve always started the bike briefly after running the floor fan on the radiator for about 5 minutes to cycle the cooled fluid into the engine. Engine temp goes down 15-20 deg C immediately. Obviously when hot.

I set the fans on mine to 100 C. So three bars. Factory was 104 C (21 SF). The mist to lower the heat soak is a good idea. I don't think I ever got the bike hot enough to unseat the radiator cap. I seem to remember 267 F (?) with my coolant mix. So hopefully I can find something that opens at about 235 F.

Hey, what's up? I wish I thought like you. I have a 2023 V4 SF, and my pump broke a week ago. I've been trying to diagnose it, and it's leaking fluid out of the weep hole. I even see a little puddle under the water pump weep hole; the tube runs to a plastic tube on the bottom of the bike. Every time the radiator gets any pressure, it starts flowing like the Nile. I talked to Ducati in Miami and Pompano it takes forever to get the part then fix it they won't even take a appointment check back in a month if we got the pumps 2 Seconds he walks around bike and says water pump replace come back in a month and check if we received the parts. I just started riding seven months ago when I lost someone; it was a perfect outlet. But now, no bike for one month + cause I can't.ride it now, and I'm not sure how I will survive. There should be loaner bikes. Anyway, by chance, are you selling the old water pump? I would forever be in your debt.

What is the CNC item by your oil filter housing cover?
