Hey All. I am trying to figure out what trailer to get for the bikes for the moto school and race team. There will be 3 bikes, need an area for the extras to go in plus my tool box. the tool box is 5 ft tall by 4ft wide. I will be using the Strapless Transport Stand that Jarel sells. And what size truck etc you use to pull it. post some pics and details for me please. Thanks

Mike

Dodge Pick-up with enclosed trailer, holds 4 bikes and gear.

not to much help but here is how we roll... ford raptor 6.2L with an American hauler 6x10 enclosed. I use pitbull TRS system in the trailer fits 2 bikes all the gear. EG... stands ezups(we carry 2) chairs, toolbox and everything else needed...
when I carry 3 bike to the track we throw the 3rd in the bed...
I have fit 3 in the trailer and 1 in the bed before but not as much gear... the ideal is 2 in the trailer 1 in the truck bed.

the second pic just shows the pitbull trs system and no other gear in the trailer

With the toolbox and three bikes I would only go with an enclosed trailer since you might encourage shady characters to lighten your load otherwise.
The pick up truck should be set up for towing i.e. have trailer brake controls and mirrors that let you see around the enclosed trailer.
I'm really happy with this truck hauling my bike:

Fireman your pic isn't showing up.

J = Thank you sir. Gonna check the trailer out. What size is it?

Zaster - Danke. Love the 2500 but that might be out of my price range. It will be an enclosed trailer and im looking at a Ram 1500 max trailer package and F150 max trailer package both within my price range.

6x10... I would recommend a 7x14 for 3 bikes plus ease of space and whatnot...
make sure its tandem axle and an Electronic brake controller is a smart addition if you end up doing a lot of hills and stop and go trailering.

American hauler that I have is an aluminum trailer with steel frame so its ridged but pretty light at 1000lbs empty and holds 3500.

Thx dude. I will take a look and check.

No pics ('cause my setup is long gone) but just noting a few things -

1) You can never have too much room. I and my race partner used a 7x16 enclosed. Pulled it with a GMC 2500 5.9l Vortex (gas). Still have the truck.

2) You'll find you'll need to carry more stuff than you ever thought you'd need. If it's for racing (and not just a few track days), you'll need room to carry spare wheels, spare tires, multiple toolboxes, a canopy (we had an 10x20), generator, spare body work, a couple of boxes/crates for spare parts, some chairs, a portable table or two, some kind of flooring (we spread an indoor-outdoor carpet cut to size under the canopy), room for a couple of coolers/ice, a work bench to roll a bike up on (for ease of wrenching), tire warmers, 5-6 electrical cords, gas cans (I carried a couple of 5-gal metal cans), oil, grease, cleaners, rags.......the list goes on and on.

Yeah, it's possible to squeeze all of it into a smaller trailer. But at the end of a race weekend when you're tired, it's hot, and you're faced with 5-6 hour drive home on a Sunday night, the last thing you're wanting to do is spend any time packing a trailer. You just want to get everything torn down, loaded, and get on the road. That's when you appreciate the extra room.

number one rule for trailers:

buy one size larger than you think !

Thanks for all the info and tips fellas. I was thinking 12' so its either 14 or 16' lol. Surprised to see they start at $4k loaded. Good news there.

Not sure what you are pulling with, but there is a benefit when pulling with tandem axles. They track better, generally ride smoother and always have at least one set of brakes.

The downside is it's damn near impossible to turn them into tight spaces by hand due to tire scrub. Also, wider is better for interior space, but murders MPG's if you are pulling with a small vehicle. So try and find a balance on that.

J lol. Im used to them costing more.

Shaka. It will probably be f150 and tandem axles def. I drove heavy wrecker before the army so moving this won't be an issue.

Any v8 or even some v6 1/2ton trucks will do fine
The difference is gas mileage. Make sure if ya go the v6 route. It has a trans cooler with the tow package just to save some trans wear from heat buildup. . If I ever get rid of the raptor.. I'm thinking of going the ecoboost turbo v6 myself

Edit in with mpgs go with vnose helps a good percentage too

I know this is overkill, but mine is a 16ft x 6.5 wide, I have 2 pit bull trailer restraints in it.
6 ft inside height.
The truck is a 2500 Ram Diesel, 15mpg towing with the cruise control on.

J the new F150 has the V6 ecoboost and max trailer package with the trans cooler and trailerbrake controller, hd brakes etc. all about towing.

Tom thanks boss. Probably cant afford a 2500 but the Ram is the sexiest truck out there. Would love to have it.

And more importantly, should you have a flat at speed, there isn't loss of tracking or control. Peace of mind when you have $75k+ investment in M/Cs riding in it. ;)
