Hello new here. My name is Josh Milner. I started on an sv650. Moved up to a 08 gsx1000 and raced 3 years on a gsx750. So that's my back story. I had to have a new bike to get all the new electronics. I went back and forth between a bmw and the panigale for months. Here are my key reasons I went with 1299. Then I will list drawbacks so others can compare who are on the fence.
1. Looks, hands down best looking bike like most ducati beforehand
2. Vtwin, if you never ridden one it's hard to explain just different in all the good ways
3. Electronic adjustment. Night and day compared to bmw
Drawbacks
1. Heat, this thing without leather pants is border line UN rideable. It's stupid hot on the right thigh. I almost returned it when I got stuck in bad traffic my first ride. Can't say it enough this thing is stupid Fing dumb hotter than hot.*without leathers*
2. Working on the bike is a lot harder then I'm used too. Just things crammed into small places with lots of covers and weird angles for bolts.
3. 1 year less warranty and higher service costs
Now no doubt in my mind a bmw is a complete package but for me I wanted a change and I wanted something I felt proud and confident on. Cruse control is meh if you base decesion off that your doing a sportbike wrong. My throttle lock is fine for long rides. Heated grips are awesome but can be done easy enough. I didn't have good luck so far but I will figure it out (Oxford didn't fit rubbed faring) I think biggest thing for me was everything I had to do to the bmw would make it same as my gsxr, same exhaust, same color, same 4 cylinder and I would have spent a lot to try and make it pretty with never being able to make it looks as good as a 1299.
I will post some pics of my baby soon hopes this helps some that were torn like me. Either way you can't go wrong but end of day go with what feels better between your legs.

Good review - I was where you were a year ago, shrieking top end S1000RR or tractor-on-steroids 1299. In my view the 1299 is a better street and mountain road riding experience (less weight definitely helps), and looks-wise, the S1000RR needs a face lift badly

As far as the heat - keep moving above 30-40 mph and it's not that bad, get stuck in traffic and yeah it sucks

Chain adjustments and rear tire swaps are much easier, that's a plus

Sorry just pics off the phone so not the best.

I have to agree on the stupid build part.. Italians make beautiful, exiting and fast bikes and cars.. but they are a nightmare to work on. If there ever will be a first price for not fitting and weak plastic clips or faring's, impossible bolds to loosen or unorganized wiring under the side fenders.. Ducati will get it.

I said it before and I say it again.. compared to my KTM's the Pani is chaos and build very poor for that price. Driving it is of course another thing.

And yes they get hot, hotter, hottest. But that was well know before buying it.

Lordlosh, could you show a pic of the bike in your first pic that is beside your 1299?
Its the one that looks to be in camouflage...

No I'm busy writing my auto-biography.....
that's just my old race bike. I got hard ons for carbon fiber and digital ACU. so i wrapped the entire bike in sheets of acu duct tape. It was a brilliant idea and got lots of luv on and off the track. I asked duct tape for a sponsor and they basically told me to pound sand :(. here you go.
I did an old bomber shark sticker with a badge of everyone of my family members units they served under in the front.

Sorry, I only asked because I thought for a moment you were going for this vibe:
But clearly you are not...

Duct tape? Didn't look to bad and probably hold up in a crash and easy to repair.

Welcome and congrats on the 1299!

yeah that terracorsa was my background and screen saver for a long time. One of my dreams is to slap some of those tires on and do a few trails (dirt roads) with my bike back home where i grew up. Wouldn't mind some extra plastics to paint tan or olive green either :)
And yes the duct tape helped in a few crashes....

Airhawk don't knock it till you try it I have been coast to coast with it very comfortable literally riding on air

Congrats on your 1299. That seat kinda makes the bike look a bit f&$ked though. When I saw the pic of your bike I almost threw up. Nice cam job on the race bike.

Hey sorry to revive a dead thread, I was looking into airhawk recently and was just trying to figure out which of their seats fit the 1299 the closest? The seat on Lord's bike looked like the Cruiser R, but I wasn't sure since it's no longer available only the small version of it and just wanted to be certain....probably is the small but better to ask :)
