Hey guys.

Sharing a feeling with some folks on how the 1299S is a great road bike. What has been said of making a 1299(or whatever the actual displacement of the 1299 is) Spec R?

This will be with the usual R upgrades - carbon, titanium rods, valves, etc.

It won't happen unless they can convince WSBK, AMA, BSB, World Superstock etc to up the displacement limit.

And that won't happen because the 1199 is so competitive as is.

I agree and concur with all of the above. No 1299R until it's allowed by WSBK and all other racing associations and no way Ducati will spend the money for a 1299R when it serves no real purpose.

so if there's a 1199R for wsbk and a 1299R for the streets, how are they gonna sell the minimum # of 1199R for homologation?

Well.

I do not know how many Rs Ducati sold in 2013 or 2014. What I do know is that they were not limited to 500, just like the 2015s are not. They used to be prior to the Panigale.

Since Ducati sold the Rs and tacked on 500 SLs, who's to say they can't sell 500 1199Rs for racing and the 1299R for the street?

While I am very impressed with my new R, I do feel that Ducati have devalued the whole R experience with the panigale line.
No numbering and cert plaques etc has made them quite run of the mill in a lot of ways.
So while the Rs are needed as homlogation specials, they certainly don't hold the novelty value they once did.

Who's gonna buy an 1199R if a 1299R is available? They have to make the 1199R for SBK homologation. I'm pretty sure they don't want to make a bike no one is going to buy. They'd rather get some return on that investment.

I could see them doing another Superleggera in a year or two with the 1285 motor. Those all sold pretty easy.

I know what you're saying.

I'm saying is that a 1299R getting made can be circumstantial. Like say the Panigale is getting replaced by a newer model and they would make an R option to be the pinnacle of its development for the road.

Since they cannot increase the displacement on the 1199R and it does not have (at least) the electronic suspension (who knows what other tech is being developed right now), they can jam it all in a 1299.

In that case, Ducati would likely designate the bike with an SP/SPS suffix or, as tcelano mentioned, they could possibly even produce a 1299SL. The R suffix is reserved for race homologation models.

I can't see Ducati producing another SL for a while tbh. Last time they did a special was in 08 with the D16RR's and they announced it was coming back in 2004/5. Just so they could sell the numbers and then make them.

The R models as you'll all know are always Road going versions of the Race bikes you see racing on Sundays. Producing an 1299R, would be lunicy when they can't race it due to Regulations. If the Regs are changed for a Ducati Twin, they'll change them for the JILF's too (that's Jap InLine 4's incase your thinking).

500 SL's wasn't ever enough for WSBK Homologation (they need to produce & sell 250 a year for 4 years I think). Also they would've had to add weight to the SL to race it. Pointless making an SL when you have to add weight to race it, hence only making 500. Remember when you add the Race Kit which comes with the bike the weight is now reduced by a further 2.5 kilo's.

It appears that in the 1299 there's more of a reworked 1199 in the 1299 than more CC's. They've re-mapped it, changed a number of engine components coupled with a different bore & stroke has made it smoother and easier to ride as a road bike. The 1199 was bonkers, the adaption of the swingarm pivot component amongst other things have made it more stable. Very similar to how the 1198 felt smoother and easier to ride over the 1098 about 8 years ago. The 1199R & SL are race engines by comparison and act like them too. Whereby the Base 1299/S models are great Road bikes and Track Day tools. If you've test ridden 1, Just think how the 2015 Multistrada has changed it characteristics using a DVT engine over the Skyhook version from 2013/14.

I had a conversation with my dealer and mentioned I was worried about the possible advent of a 1299 R when I was about to buy the Panigale R. I think there's already a rumour.

He said no, due to WSBK. But a Superleggera with a bigger motor..... he just smiled

I agree and thought they lost a little of the special in the Tricolore also

Although I've never seen another guy riding an R when I'm out on mine, I see tons of them at the local Ducati dealer in for a service. Certainly doesn't make you feel special but with them being a lot cheaper than previous Rs they arent.

I've actually seen more SLs being ridden (two to be exact) than I have Rs.

No way they would make a 1299r would be completely pointless since R is there race version ,plus Ducati already said there's making the R in the 1199 displacement so it can race Wsbk . .
