With all this new technology...do you think?

Trouble is with any of these, cars or bikes, at the moment is they have such a limited range and such a long charge time none of them are practical in the real world.

The race bikes that were showcased at the IOM TT Z grandprix were laughable, in fact they came past, made no noise and everyone did just laugh. Only one or two made a full lap!!!

Even regardless of the technology while costs are high, why would anyone buy one with cheaper alternatives available especially in todays climate/living conditions?! Did you know with these vehicles you actually have to RENT the batteries? Once you 'own' the vehicle, you still have to pay a monthly premium for having a battery....... well that idea can just f*ck right off and I'm sure that is not just my view.

When it does all take off and become more viable, which it will, I cannot wait for extra taxes and duties on electricty to subsidise the losses from no one buying fossil fuel anymore, fan-f*cking-tastic!!

They are helping the environment, electric power is far better than burning gas/diesel fuels for the environment.

I didn't want to get into this debate, but figured it was inevitable in this thread.

But where do you think the parts that make the batteries come from? What about the machines and plants where the batteries are fabricated? What about the disposal of the batteries? What about when the batteries need to be replaced after 5-10 years?

If anyone thinks they are saving the environment by driving their electric/hybrid cars, they are mistaken.

And BTW - I also love the "doomsday" comments about how we will be running out of fossil fuels any day now that always come with these types of discussions.

We have maybe tapped into about 5% of the fossil fuel reservoirs that we know exist worldwide...and we are constantly developing new technology and new drilling vessels that can locate and access new reservoirs.

In other words, we haven't utilized 95% of the reservoirs we do know about and have access to, not to mention the ones we don't know about or can't access because we simply haven't had the technology until now. There are now numerous rigs that can drill in 15,000' of water and my company (in partnership with BP) is developing a Rig that can drill in 20,000' of water and has a 20,000psi Blowout Prevention System.

But lets not let that get in the way of sensationalism and media drama.

Nah... Actually been a couple of years. I moved to a place where the closest track is 3 hrs away. Hoping to get there late summer though.

Dude. The closest track to me is about 4.5hrs away and I regularly drive 7-10hrs to get to the track.

Unless the power outlet your using is not supplied by a coal burning plant then its all for not. Until most of what has been mentioned and we get away from burning leftover dinosaurs and using nuclear reactors it doesn't seem to be any better than running gas in the tank.

Exactly.

And that is the point people keep missing. They think they are "saving the planet" by driving their Prius. But they fail to realize that Prius is primarily constructed of parts made by fossil fuels, in a plant of machines made my fossil fuels, that is likely powered by fossil fuels. And at some point those batteries will need to be disposed of.

The ONLY way somebody is truly going to save the planet is if they start walking everywhere.......barefooted........so they don't wear rubber/plastic shoes that are based on fossil fuels.

Married, kid, working 50-60hrs a week, didn't have a bike I'd consider track-able for 18 months of that time period. Etc.

I know, excuses. Trust me, you don't have to drag me out to the track or anything, but life has had a way of letting me know what time I have to be focused on what.

At a point now where I will be getting out this season and definitely planning as many as possible for 2016.

Yeah I understand, just giving you ..... :)

It really is hard when working a full time job because when the track is far away, you basically have to count on throwing away Friday and Monday also (unless you want to drive all night).

I'd love to have Ktm's electric enduro bike. I mean my Honda CRF450r just goes around in circles never more than 5 miles from my truck. No more valve adjustments. No more air filter scrubbing.

But ERS is the future for road going vehicles. Not batteries.

I think even if we were capable of engineering a electric or hybrid bike that could match performance, weight, range and recharge time of a straight internal combustion machine, that is going to a) cost an absolute fortune, and b) never possess the character and soul that would cause me to want to open my checkbook. Nobody tells their buddies stories of rolling on the throttle and makes MOSFET humming and electric motor whirring sounds...

Agreed.

I will never own an electric bike or car.

Agreed! Reminds me of when I used to have some RC cars but I always loved and had the gas powered RC's as you could hear the power (@30,000RPMS!) and the exhaust of the nitro methane burning engine would singe the nostrils and make your eyes water like you were cutting onions. Now that's fun!

I suppose I'm outnumbered...and for what it's worth, I love my new and first Duc!

Let me say that again, I love my first Duc! The sound, the feel, the energy... Screw electric!

This reminds me of when my dad made fun of me for having my gsxr 1000, he always said it had no life to it. After many years, he fell in love with the performance over his Harley's. Fast forward to now, we have a new 1299...that outperforms just about anything and it has the sound and soul the gsxr was missing. My dad is so happy with the 1299 it's indescribable. It makes me happy knowing how much the bike means to him...and peoples most can't understand that. Just the other day his wife told me she regularly catches him staring at the bike 5 minutes before and after work everyday. She thinks he's nuts, but I understand it...

IMO the next evolution of the Ducati Superbike will be a V4.

They are reaching the limits of the V-Twin configuration as it applies to Superbikes (in terms of performance and cc allowances). We won't see a Panigale 1699 racing in WSBK.

Man that is awesome, seriously.

Agree!

Funny because I converted my dad from BMW twins to the speed and handling of the original Ninja 900 - subsequently he picked up a '86 GSXR1100 (still one of my favorite bikes, that thing had torque and low weight) and never looked back. I hope your dad can still ride, mine has MS and can only dream about riding a motorcycle, but he loves the 1299 (although he was leaning toward the '15 S1000RR)

Nice analogy. Yes, despite the insistence from some of a pending ICE apocalypse, or the fearmongering statements equating the emergence of one technology with the immediate extinction of the other, there is true potential to be achieved via merging the strengths of both approaches, thereby creating an overall higher performing, and dare I say a more satisfying experience, than what may have been previously possible. I'm excited to see what lies ahead.

The new Ducati 1049 Quattrocilindro motor will be a beast:D

Im going to put my deposit down for an "R" model in 2018.

My dad gets super geeked out now about sport bikes. His new wife is family friends with Valentino Rossi and Angel Nieto, so that certainly eased him over to the dark side . As far as choice of bikes, I wasn't initially shooting for a 1299 because of a few variables, but he was adamant about getting a sportbike and eventually the 1299 made sense. Being that he's 58 years old, this is likely his last sportbike, so I let him pick whatever bike he wanted. Looking back, I'm happy we went with a new 1299. I wanted an 899 or a used 1199 because we don't ride all that often so I figured we would save a little money...but it's just money. My dad wanted new, so we went new and he is an absolute kid in a candy store.

He's a guy that never treats himself to anything. His wife drives a new car, while he drives a beat up old ford. So, it was an amazing feeling seeing him smile through his full face helmet, I could see him smiling simply through his eyes when he rolled out of the dealership. And to think, he wouldn't wear a helmet when he had harley...
