Imagine the fuckery that bike has gone through in those 1000kms. I know theres a couple different takes on the break in of a new motor and some say hard break in is the way to go but im pretty sure it doesnt call for redline after redline :(. Unless you're getting a fire sale i would pass too.

Every engine is taken to the redline at the manufacturer to look for any faults.

Still from op description I would walk away.

I don't mess with Demos because I know how I would be with a demo bike. I can't imagine the dealer is putting a lot of TLC in them either.

Buy a used base model...thats my advice. Make sure it's still under factory warranty and just extend the warranty for another 4 years for around $1500. You'll be safe as far as the warranty is concerned and you wont get slaughtered when you're done with it. Base model is more than enough bike.

Why wouldn't it be worth the plane ticket over on an investment like this? Or consider renting a truck or van with tie-downs in case you like it? Is it 16 or 17? You'd get a better deal on a 16. Don't pay more than 21 for it. Shop around online for what other dealers are asking for their 1299S demos; there's quite a few out there. For peace of mind, have the engine checked and do a compression check.

I would not get a demo bike primarily due to abuse during break in period.
If you are spending that much, you may as well go for a new one.

At 20 to 22k, the cost of a plane ticket, hotel, and rental car are not quite worth it. The time and money you spend would net out to new. I have friends in the area so a trip out would end up being about a grand. When I called it was advertised as new, at that price on new it was a no brainer.

If this were a 55k 2014 used Porsche Boxster, what I am pushing off to buy a 1299, there's no discussion, I'd be on a plane.

When I buy a new bike I like to upgrade

The S gives me:
forged wheels
electronic ohlins
auto blipper
cornering ABS
Swag!

Base gives me:
auto blipper
cornering ABS
Just a little swag!

The roads here are brutal, and the ability to soften the suspension is worth something

The manager says it's the bike he rides to and from dealer, no real demos. Assuming I believe him, it's like a used bike.

I'm looking at a new option to compare.

For $18-$19,000 I would. Anymore isn't worth it. A demo bike is worse than a used bike- romped on with no regard for its future, and generally ridden by people who have minimal experience on such a bike (hence their need for a test ride).

Ducati also got rid of the full warranty for demos a while back so it is literally a worse than used bike in every regard.

Don't pay more than 21k for New or Demo? I had a dealer contact me today. I had reached out a week ago, guess he was getting through his inbox. My goal is 21k OTD, for me that is the 1299 and dealer fees. It's out of state so I pay the TT&L at home.

I dont doubt they do that but its under controlled runs. When people are demoing bikes it can potentially be redline after redline.
Ive heard of store owners using vehicles and bikes as their own demo but thats impossible to prove and unless you're getting a crazy good deal its not worth it

Demo. You were talking about the demo although most here were getting you to go new. Everyone's assuming the worst with the demo. Too often traffic or controlled runs will keep the abuse down if any. I don't abuse bike on demo runs. Conditions on the street don't allow for it nor do I abuse others property.

Thanks! I was hoping I could do new for 21k but it may take a little more, and if that's the case I got to think hard. I was just thinking a demo for 20k, but now looking at a few used ones in the 18k range.

I agree with you. I have demo'ed a few bikes and don't come anywhere near redline. It's not my bike and I'm not familiar with it, no need to run it up. One of my demos was unsupervised, so I had all the opportunity.

At this time of the year, it will be hard to land the deal you're looking for. If you wait until the fall, you'll find it easier.
