Haven't followed WSBK for years. I just casually take a look at standings throughout the year. I saw that Alvaro was flying last year but this year, he is in 3rd and Toprak/BMW are way ahead. Can someone give me a quick 2-3 sentence summary as to why this is? I know Toprak is super talented, but is the current lead more to do with BMW's advancment of the M1000RR, deterioration in Alvaro's performance this year, or something else? Thanks.

More specifically A NEW ERA BEGINS: big rule changes come in for WorldSBK in 2024

Alvaro is carrying an extra 6 kilos

It looked like Toprak was born to ride M1000. He was strong immediately after throwing his leg over it. Bautista, on the other hand, was on the back foot from the beginning of the season. If my memory serves, he had some injury related stuff going on, and it appeared his motivation was not the highest due to him and Ducati not agreeing on the pay going forward. Sure, weight may have something to do with it, but I recon it is not as simple as that. I think Ducati is banking on the new Pani to take the fight, but Toprak is on fire. That being said, as much as I like MotoGP races, I fall asleep every time I watch WSBK race. Commentary and lack of competitive racing sucks seemingly every year, although I do tune in.

6 extra kilos on a bike that weighs 168 is not insignificant. That’s like half tank of fuel and that’s why you see Bautista come strong in the latter half of the race.

There’s usually a year delay until we see the R version of “new” models (i.e. 22 V4 -> 23 V4R). The new V4 is a 25 and therefore the R will most likely arrive in 26. But I guess they could rush it through for 25. Allegedly, it’ll have unicorn service-free seamless gearbox (WSBK rules state you can’t service the gearbox but I guess they’d 7 engines/gearboxes to play with). If it’s similar to BMW swingarm development, it may take some time for Corse to figure out the new rear swingarm since they have no experience with this in WSBK. I wouldn’t hold my breath in it immediately winning races. In fact, I’d bet the opposite and bank on some teething problems and a few iterations of the rear swingarm before they get it right. Toprak is going to have it pretty easy come 25 and 26 if he’s stays in the WSBK paddock.

Bautista weighs like close to nothing. I think it was Redding along with blocks like Petrux who lobbied for weight equalizer. I believe it was meant to equalize riders not to slow down the winners, but I could be wrong and maybe Bautista was winning because he was feather light.

motogp and toprak don't want each other.

Toprak certainly has the talent to ride a motorcycle fast, but MotoGP is stacked with talent to the rafters and is a cutthroat game and best played through the ranks of Moto3 and Moto2. A lot of risk putting Toprak on the MotoGP bike especially on some "new project" as it can spell doom to one's career. But it sounds like the man has the ambition..

The weight is meant to equalize things. Are we saying that now that Toprak is on even footing to the Ducatis/Alvaro, his superior skill is why BMW are in the lead? Of course some credit must be given to BMW for making a great bike.

Toprak’s results are far ahead of any other BMW rider. Surely have to give him the credit.

Of 3 other Bmw riders :

VDM is just a sham to make Topracks atmosphere positive, he never had any results in his entire career
Gerloff is still a rookie
Redding ? Most experienced of 3, but looks like never really adopted to ride BMW. And lately just runs his mouth wide instead of racing.

Also, don't forget BMW runs with a lot of concessions. Ducati is limited in many areas.

Yamaha, Kawa - just nowhere in terms of package. Forget already when they ve upgraded their bikes last time. 2019?

often success comes down to timing. as far as motogp goes, i don't see how timing will work for him. maybe yamaha will suddenly come back to form and decide toprak is their guy, but chances seem low.

Sure, but he got on the bike that Redding was complaining about all year and showed what it can do.

He was also quite often beaten on the Yamaha last year by Bautista quite late in the race on acceleration alone.

I can only see Toprak in MotoGP when BMW moves there eventually with the 800cc bikes. If he does well in testing, he'll be there. Yama
s got #20 to win, but I am not holding my breath for any Japanese to dethrone Europeans until new regs come into play. Ducati with 93 and 63 will take some beating and then all the hungry ex-Ducati youngsters on Aprilia and KTM to punish Ducati for their dismissal. Those are the contenders IMO. New regs will turn all upside down and maybe we'll see something completely different.

dont think so, he will be too old by then.

Dont forget - Toprack is the best inside of a kindergarten.

Bautista is 40
Rea is close to 40
Bulega - rookie
Iannone - is old

Rest of the field are NPC actors
