Hey everyone! new to the forum, my first ducati and i love it. so far. haha. I use to ride a yamaha r1 and its definitely DIFFERENT. I bought it Friday 5/4 with like 2 miles on it and now i have almost 200 But i do have a few questions to make sure everything is normal if anyone would like to give me their input i'd definitely appreciate it. keep in mind i'm used to a JAPANESE BIKE

1) The smoking - Ive heard this is normal? Does it on idle at warm up but eventually goes away.

2) Is it me or this thing has super long gears. my r1 when i was on the hwy at 60-70 i was sitting at like 6k rpm the duc is like at 3-4k rpm.

3) I feel like it has a pretty big lag when i go WOT at 60mph in 6th gear on this bike vs my r1 is that normal?

4) Vibration - Is it me or does this bike vibrate and rides really rough compared to a japanese bike? it almost feels like a harley. Feels like it vibrates all the way thru acceleration, is that normal?

5) dealer told me I can shift up without using the clutch (even though i still use the clutch) how many of you guys do this?

That's all I can come up with for now! I would definitely appreciate your input! Thank you so much for viewing!

Again, I'm a total NEWB and I'm coming from a japanese bike so I may just be dumb in this ducati world. lol

1 - The smoking goes away. Mine does it on occasion and it has 1300 miles on it.

2 - The R1 probably didn't redline at 11,500 either.

3 - I dont know what you mean here.

4 - Yes the V-Twin will vibrate more than a 4 cylinder.

5 - Im sure everyone does it. Once you get used to it you cant go back. Just flick the gears the same way you would normally. No need for the clutch, the bike does that for you.

Hey man! Congrats to you and all the very best. Matter of fact the founder of this forum lives out there with you! (Duc)

Yes it goes away (hopefully) and you will hear a number of different trains of thought on this (break in, etc) but it should go away soon.

2) Is it me or this thing has super long gears. my r1 when i was on the hwy at 60-70 i was sitting at like 6k rpm the duc is like at 3-4k rpm.

Yes. When (if) you change the rear sprocket this will change a bit.

3) I feel like it has a pretty big lag when i go WOT at 60mph in 6th gear on this bike vs my r1 is that normal?

TOTALLY different than an R1 man. Depends on what your tach is at too.

4) Vibration - Is it me or does this bike vibrate and rides really rough compared to a japanese bike? it almost feels like a harley. Feels like it vibrates all the way thru acceleration, is that normal?

Like Evol said- you are now the proud owner of a Twin and it will feel alot different on this. I wouldnt go as far to say Harley though. Embrace the vibration my friend! :D

5) dealer told me I can shift up without using the clutch (even though i still use the clutch) how many of you guys do this?

Read your manual on the Ducati Quick Shifter (DQS) and use the hell outta it man! The thing works great and is made for that purpose. I personally use it thru ALL the gears regardless of speed and LOVE IT !
You will also hear differed thoughts on this too, but I used it from Day One after pickup and not had ANY issues with it whatsoever!

I will PM you some other thoughts but have fun and ride hard brother!

Levity, it reduces the fear of death.

Is this a typo?

Nam- what the Captain is saying is that you perhaps left the number ONE (1) off the speed making it 160 MPH. He is often observed traveling the beltway at this speed which results in a white blur .

Just curious if that was correct - I have never tried 6th at 60 mph so maybe I am missing out. :)

Will try on the way home.

Nice awesome, Man everyone is so much nicer on here than the yamaha forum. haha. I guess i just gotta get used to that vibration then. so what gear do you guys typically ride on the hwy at 60-70mph? considering it lags a bit in 6th at the speed. unless i'm the only granny rider here and everyone is mobbin 160 on the hwy. haha

You bought a 20k+ performance motorcycle without know what a quick-shifter is?

3rd or 4th for me depending on whether or not I end up in that lumpy part of the curve. :)

Yeah kinda.. I probably shoulda did more research on the bike but I honestly bought it just for the looks. I sold my r1 back in 2011 and told myself I wouldnt get another bike unless it was a ducati. so when they launched this i was really hyped to get it. I didn't realize this bike had so much options compared to a japanese bike. I was used to just riding and stunting, not so much tracking (which i prob wont do much of). Def wont be stunting on THIS bike. haha.

Welcome and congrats on the bike.

You will need to ride this very differently than your R1 if you want to get the best of it. The power does not really kick in until around 7k. Then the fun really begins. On that basis I tend to ride around the 6k band unless I am on a steady throttle (not very often as I keep away from boring highways). I would probably be in 4th or more likely to give me instant vroom 3rd.

6th is a high gear and will give you that lag at low revs. I would think the bike is probably only around 2-3k at 60 in 6th. Not good, it could labour the engine and also mean you have no wriggle room to get out of a situation if needed.

jap to ducati

hi and welcome to the amazing world of owning a ducati. you have got the best ever and you will never go back.
as of all of your question, it is new to you and different and alot will be different but it is all good what your asking. just get on it and ride it, 600 miles after the first servive and you can start to give it some. in wet mode for the break in. i went straight to sport mode after that. now ive done 2500 plus and i'm on race mode everyday. this bike is f*"KING amazing. i'm going to LE MANS for the MotoGP next weekend with 5 R1 boys. I'll let you know what happened....
Just take it easy for the first 600 mile,1000 km, break in.
It dose use a bit more oil than a jap bike.
The ride will get better after the break in period.
good luck and happy ridding.

 damn, looks like i better start rippin it.

Don't take this the wrong way, I mean it helpfully, but it may be worth some advance rider training. Using the engine revs properly is extremely important for cornering and bike handling. It is not just about "ripping" it or racing on a track.

Yeah I noticed it when i was on the freeway doin 60-70 and wonderin to myself why it was at such a low rpm. haha. thanks for the input, i will try to keep it around 6k. I guess EVERYTHING is different switching to a ducati. haha. Just used to it already BEING at 6-7k rpm on the freeway with a r1 already.

Nice, Thanks for the input my friend. if you get a chance you should try riding the r1 and see how you like that (if you haven't already). have fun at motogp

Hi, welcome and congratulations. I don't think Marc meant for you to cruise the freeway at 6K, perhaps 4-5K. He was saying the bike comes alive and is more responsive at 7K+. Have good throttle control when cornering, etc... AT 60mph I'm in 3rd or 4th depending on the situation. Sometimes second :)

No matter your preference for breaking in, the common theme is not to lug the motor and don't keep at one engine speed for very long. Shift gears and run it through the rev range. Depending on your method that could mean up to 6K for the first 600 miles or like some people, up to 11K. Have fun and enjoy your new bike!
