The on-line parts breakdown for the gear shifter indicates a LEFT HAND thread at the pedal end - see item 16 in the attached thumbnail. (This would make for simple gear shifter height adjustment - just rotating the adjuster would shorten/lengthen the connecting rod and change the height.) BUT...
