What is there to looks for before buying a low miles (under 3k) 2012 1199S? I thought I saw a post about that on here before but can’t seem to find it, appreciate your help in advance!

Hoping to become a first time Ducati owner, but not new to riding sport bikes. Have a couple GSXRs currently, and have been riding street and tracks for 20yrs. My bikes are set up for the track right now and thought this could be a good street bike. Am I off base here? Better to look at ‘14 era 1299S or newer?

1299 is a 2015+ model.

In 2013, they added a sight window to check oil level. In 2012, you'll have to remove the fairing to check oil level.
Heatshield was upgraded if it's stock exhaust. I don't remember anything else.

Don't have to remove the fairing. I use a small LED flashlight and can see it very easily. I have 29.000 miles on my 2012. Yes, I've had some problems, but as I said, it has 29,000 miles on it. I'm 67 years old and I love riding it.

Things to consider. If the bikes sit for a while a lot of the rubber hoses can dry and become brittle, prone to leaking. Had some of mine replaced under warranty. So if miles are low/wasn't ridden regularly you should check for leaks or wet spots around any hoses/engine areas. The oil sight window is not on earlier 1199s but it is not an issue, still easy to see as jjsC6 mentioned.

The mirror spring mechanism begins to fail and you may need to account for replacement of mirror(s)

Fasteners may be missing left and right due to not being tightened enough or not enough loc-tite from factory.

Otherwise, as long as all maintenance has been done you will be good to go. Im at 12000 miles and about 7 years of ownership, no major issues thus far.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it! So nothing major to look out for is what it sounds like. This bike at sub 3k miles for $11.5k seem reasonable? All stock except for rearsets. I’ve seen 2013 & 14’s with Akro exhausts and other work for around $14k

Are you saying that because asking price is higher than typical going rate? I’m always looking for a fair deal
[/QUO
According to NADA low retail is around $8500, average retail around $11200. I would try to talk him down.

Thanks, I saw that too after last post. There’s book estimates and actual market value is why I ask ;)

if you about to do street riding/commuting consider to buy yourself a 1299 as it seems to be more settled and refined.
all 1199 are jerky and histerical. Partucular "S" model basically differs with the suspension, itis Ohlins instead of Marzocchi/Sachs.And if you are 85+ kilos, I'd stick with Ohlins...

Thanks for the info - looked at an 1199s today didn’t get to ride it. It will start on street and end up at the track and I’m over 85 kilos

my 1299 was harsh with Akra UpMap. Now that it’s dynotuned it runs nice. All these big twins need Dyno time

Thanks, Good to know, planning to have tuned for smoothness by a reputable shop we have in the NW.

Actually looked at a 2012 1199S today with under 8000 miles, the first service has been done, has a Termi full exhaust, rear sets, and some other stuff, and one owner. We agreed 10.5k, seem appropriate?

Awesome, the “S” model is a must for the 99s cause they have factory LED headlights that are wicked powerful

if u had a test ride on one, you would have already paid the $10,500 for it!

I like the "rawness" of the 1199, refined bikes are boring to me.

Last of the big twins, Im hanging onto mine even when i get the 4. They only went V4 because these puppies are at the edge of the practical limit.

yeah for 2026 we’ll be seeing boring electric bikes that barely whisper

I’ll be hanging onto my 1299 forever or until a new brutal twin comes out

by no means does getting it tuned take away the rawness
Part of that rawness, to me, is that absolute power down at the bottom. I can rip it wide open from 2,500 rpm and the bike tried to shoot out from under me, plus there’s no dead spot right in the middle of the rev range

it still retains its tractor like feel

samco hoses are great. Mine will be done at the 15K DESMO service unless the factory ones don’t last that long. It’s on the list.
