1198 vs 1299

both are really good bikes
i rented the 1198 and seriously thought about buying one
in the end i bought the 1299S
the 1198 has so much torque, away from idle, that its just facinating
the 1299 was the first one that could counter this
the 1198 engine running culture is relatively rough
here the 1299 is in advance
the 1198 wants to run straight, shes not a friend of fast curves
the panis go on with curves much easier
i enjoy the 1299 maintenance free chain/sprocket camshaft drive
theres no risk of a big damage
dry cluch vs. wet clutch is a philosophic question
i like the wet more because its quiet
the dry clutch if it has an open cover just looks great
the knee/tank touch is better on the 1198 the tank is more edgy
the 1198 fuel lamp is a bad joke in the sun you see nothing
the 1198 stock exhaust sound is more quiet than the 1299 one
the 1299 has a more relaxed seat position
less pressure on the hand angles
the 1198 i drove had a horrible fuel consumption
the 1299 consumpts less than 1200ccm BMWs
overall you can say the 1198 is the last evolution of the pantah generation
and the panigale the first of a revolutionary new generation
you need to buy the expensive termis
advance 1198 - except the clutch - less mechanical ground noises

The 1198 feels torqier down low, but it also has the wheelspin to go with it. Or worse yet, crazy pop wheelies WITH wheelspin.

The 1199 is a bit easier there. But harder hitting up top. Like a very fun old two stroke, in a modern superbike kind of way. 1299 is just bonkers. The Pani is all about light weight and very racy feelings. Some ways it's more docile than the old Ducatis, and in some ways it's even more aggressive.

Here's the bike you're actually after....

I never liked any of the ducs until the Panigales to be honest. Rode an 1198r once and was not a fan. Felt too heavy and sloppy.

Seriously? Does anyone really have trouble wheelying an 1199 / 1299 ?

Yep, but that's because I'm not at all comfortable with the sensatiom yet :p. Clutching up is just too violent with the 1299, so I've started trying power wheelies from about 60-65 mph :p. Getting higher and higher, but taking it very slowly :)

I struggle tremendously to wheelie the Dragon Lady. I have to open her throttle more than a quarter. That is just plain stupid. Damn I feel like a troll. Prince Albert where is ArseHammer?

I owned 2 X 998s for years, have ridden the 999 and test rode the 1098.

If you want a motorcycle for JUST torquey Motor, get the 1098/1198

it will surprise you every time you ride, with the unwordly amount of TQ it has..

If you want to hit the curves with precision and more importantly, with EASE.. 1199/1299 is where its at.. no question

these bikes handle so well you will think its telepathy (1299 slightly better than the 1199)

at the end you have to ask yourself what it is that you want..

Dont get bogged down with silly arguments of "real ducati" and "last tubular frame" etc.. WHY spend so much money on a complete WANT only to get something that doesn't WORK as well as the other option..

I was/am a diehard 916/996/998 fan, but you won't see me trying to hold on to a 998, dump tens of thousands of dollars into trying to make it quicker, the point is to go fast and have fun. No point buying something that makes you work twice as hard and rewards you half as much..

good luck

Why try?

Most of the time mine is coming up after rounding corners at 70 and then pinning it after apex and the bike straightens up a bit in second gear.

In anything above third you have to try unless the few times I'm going up a hill above 100 and the front lifts.

Thank you. Yep, 1x99 does not have trouble wheelying. It is almost on demand with mine, and that was with an old 1199. No clutch needed. At that power level it doesn't matter what the torque spec paper says. And anything more than third gear is irrelevant, as you'd be too fast for anyone to watch (i am assuming that's OP's most precious point). :D
I actually have trouble keeping the front wheel down around the track.

And the rear wheel down under braking, but that's a different story....

And here is an unintentional wheelie.

Without proper triples on the 848/1098/1198 models the handling is like a garbage truck.

I put Nichols Triples on my 848 (Kyle Racing) and the bike handled great. However clearance on the front cylinder was severely reduced.

Like Prince Albert said they are clumsy bikes without the correct steering geometry.

Good Luck! and Happy Riding!

Ive tried both 1198 and 1299S, hands down winner is the 1299.
Makes loads more torque, looks more modern and beautifully designed.
electronic aids are better with clutchless upshifts and downshifts, electronic suspension, dynamic suspension, electronic Ohlins steering damper...etc etc.

You can switch them all off and enjoy almost 1300cc torque...
also all panigales with the superquadro motor use internal cam chain instead of Cam belts on the testatretta motors.

No brainer! the 1299 is a much better bike over the 1198 and more improved version of the first gen 1199.

I ride an 2012 1199 S Tricolore and 2014 monster 1200S. I might have to sell both monster1200 and 1199 Tri...to be able to afford the new 1299 Panigale S.

The 1198 is the last of the trellis framed, cambelt driven, dry clutch Ducati superbike..

I you can find an 1198"R"...that is the bike that is worth keeping..."last of the mohicans"...then get yourself the 1299S!

the way i see it, for your intended purpose, get the bike that give you more appeal, it doesnt really matter what you get for goofing around, they will do what you ask for

just dont start compare a 1198 to a 1299, its not even apple to orange, its more like apple to Caviar :)

1198 has the classic look of Ducati, and ride like one

1299 will murder 600s in corner and crush 1000s on the straight, and reliable/comfortable enough to do multiday trip

I've been off the 1299 for 5 days, rode it to work today. It's the longest time off since I bought it in June.

It amazing that even after that short time I forgot how good and how fast this bike is...wow.

I had an 1198 and then traded it on an 1199, it did take some time to get the feel for the power delivery of the new motor but i once i had the electronics worked out it is a much better behaved street bike then the 1198. To get back some of the down low feel i went +2 on the rear. The panigale tips in alot easier and generally less of a handfull to throw an 1198 around. I find i used to sit in the 1198 but the panigale feels like you are sitting ontop of it, the 1198 was abit more longer ride friendly. With going +2 and fitting the full termi and upmap just made the panigale, now i never look back

thanks for thoughtfully answering the question of clearly comparing 1198 1299. i have same question . i currently have 998 love the torque. i have ridden street fighter 1098, 2015 monster 1200 and 2015 Diavel all 3 strangley don't seem to have the torque of 998. I am leaning towards getting 1299s now that it seems torque is back.

again thanks
