1199 Base Suspension Setup Marzocchi

Ohlins 30mm NIX kit, .90kg springs, 7mm showing about the triple (stock is 5mm I think), 14 clicks out compression, 12 clicks rebound. Rear is stock, I can get proper SAG with 2 threads showing, 9 clicks out compression, 7 clicks rebound. The front and back is now nicely balanced, compresses and rebounds at about the same rate.

Fixed 2 things,

Bikes is more balanced, less pitch (weight transfer) when getting off the brakes mid turn, can get on the gas earlier

Tighter turns, more stable, goes where you want it. I think it's due to the front riding lower now. Also the lighter spring absorbs bumps better, using up more suspension. Bike doesn't run wide when getting on the gas

90kg springs, what's your riding weight?

Hi Jyli,

How is the Ohlin NIX kit compare to stock with lighter spring?

compression damping is better, less brake dive but still absorb bumps well. can't give you a like for like answer because i put in .95 to the Marzocchi, and .90 to Nix, i screw up the rebound damping on the marzochi by not tightning the rebound all the way before removing the cap. riding the stock marzocchi, it's actually pretty solid, i would say try chaning the springs before investing in a cartridge kit, worst case, you're out $120 for the springs, and resellable. I sold mine for $80, so i am only out $40 for the experiment.

135 dry, but i usually put on 20lbs of gear

What if you were 30 lbs more dry, what would you use? :)

Jyli: so you didn't screw the rebound all the way in and that broke the fork? or after you re-did it and the damping came back? Is there a spring chart somewhere to determine the spring rate? I am 148 dry, cannot decide which spring to use.

Interesting comments thus far.....so far I have little to nothing complain about regarding the base suspension after yesterday's fast ride thru the canyons (more sweepers than tights). Today's ride will be more technical, perhaps my thoughts will change but I don't think they will.

<170lbs dry, sag @ 36fr/31r....tires 36/32.

I have Ohlins on my other two bikes and have had them on many other bikes I've owned.

I suggest calling Catalyst Reaction for some free consultation regarding spring rates.

The damping adjusting rod is actually screwed into the damping rod, unlike other forks where the adjusting rod is a drop-in. I unscrewed the adjusting rod all the way and it pop out, I am guessing that relief the pressure in the cartridge. I can take detail pictures of the cap and post it up. After putting the damping adjusting rod back, and pump the damping unit, i can feel negative pressure, but not enough to damp the spring rebound.

Hi Jyli, where do you get the lighter spring for the Marzocchi? I ve talk to Catalysis Reaction and seem like they need to custom made a spring for the Marzocchi.
