More important than any of the responses so far, by wearing a rucksack you are a) raising the distance between your head and the floor if you come off and land on your back, real bad for the neck in an accident and b) anything hard in your pack could penetrate the body on impact or force the back to bend back in an unnatural manner.

In the UK many medics will tell you not to wear a rucksack for these reasons. I was also told not to whilst on a First Biker on Scene medical course (tells you what to do in the event of being the first person to arrive at the scene of a rider down; when to and how to remove helmets etc - highly recommended)

PS I use Kriega back packs and/or tail packs and/or tank bags and/or bumbags when having to take stuff with me.

Good points to make. Rucksacks also don't go well with aero humps in leathers...

sorry my misunderstanding you are talking back packs not us20s which i use will try the strap option tho

DP tank bag, as has already been said needs protection underneath, Oxford RT60L tail pack, worked a treat 2900 miles and didn't get one scratch. The R&G tail tidy came in handy as i could strap the bag to it.

Duh, I just fiddled around with the tank bag. It's got a plastic stiffener ring you can pop out, makes it flexible and crushable. I'll try it this way think that's what I need.

Nice catch, took mine out now easier to use.....didn't read the instructions (still haven't but assume it's supposed to come out!)

i couldn't believe I was thinking about a bag before a took delivery. the reality is, you need to have a bag to take the bike anywhere or just for ........ on a commute. Saying bags don't belong on this bike, or that you bungie .... to yours is fine... I get it. However, I dropped the coin for the tail bag and I really, really like it. doesn't damage the paint. holds well at speed. Packs (lightly) for a weekend and looks decent. My back is bad enough and can't ride with a backpack. I fully approve of the bag. Lot of good info in this thread. Pick one that works the best for you and make sure to completely ignore anyone who tells you bags don't belong on this bike.

What does the tank bag attach to in the front?

I'm going to throw another one out there.
Ventura rack - I've done two long weekends away and it has blown away any other alternative like Kriega tail packs (US20 and US30 both failed magnificently).
They bolt on with only four bolts in the pillion peg area. It takes ten minutes to put on and ten minutes to take off.
At the end of the day, you simply slide your pack off and in the morning slide it back on.
No messing around with tape and straps and blah blah.

In terms of aerodynamics, sure it's not the best but I've happily blasted at top gear and full noise (you do the math) and not noticed any considerable loss of performance.

I'll probably go down this route, although I do like the Kriega bags.

How large was the gap between the rack and the rear cowl? And what size of pack is that?

Thanks bishopau! This is exactly what I was looking for...didn't know it was availible. That and a tank bag...I can pack enough for two weeks!

Saw this in person in Ocala, it does not collapse and the guy who had it said its worn out his paint near the bottom of the tank... just fyi

I also use the Ventura system.
Just to be sure not to scratch any bodyparts of the tail section I switch to the duoseat (instead of the 'mono' cover) when using the rack.
