So I recently moved from the States to a different part of the world and I was quoted $55,000 USD depending upon the exchange rate.

Going to be my first Ducati, but is it really worth the price? And no there is no other way of getting around the import tax sadly.

You definitely moved to the wrong country. !!!

Tricolore in Australia is about $42,000 aud.

Tricolore goes for 29,995.00 $CAN up here.

Problem is you need a 15,000.00 $ sled to get you trough the winter.

Asian countries are known for high import tax on large displacement motorcycles, usually anything over 400cc.

In the 90s' Taiwan had a maximum allowed displacement of 125cc, anything above this incurred a 100% import duty. Trade regulations meant that they and most other Asian countries, I think Thailand included, had to increase this limit to 400cc. This displacement limit for import duties was and is still there to curtail competition for local manufactures.

Honda, having a local plant, are a little more reasonable - you can get a CBR1000RR for ~ US $18K. Though that's still 50% more than you'll pay in the US, it is better than 100% more for the 1199s.

So in short - You definitely moved to the wrong part of the world to buy a Ducati 1199- sorry.

From this Article: http://www.asphaltandrubber.com/news/ducati-opening-factory-thailand/ Maybe things will change?

Thanks for those links DRSapp,

Yea, I most definitely did move to the wrong country!!

Fun fact, despite Honda having a factory here in Thailand I don't believe they produce the CBR1000RR since it costs $25.5k USD.

Unfortunately the Ducati factory in Thailand only produces the Monster 795 which keeps the price down to 13k USD.

So I've sucked it up and simply can't resist the 1199 S, so I'm off to put a deposit down and make the reservation. I figure its better to spend the 100% import tax on a exotic superbike than 328% on a BMW run of the mill 5 series that is equivalent to $246k USD!

UK Cost

Just to round the numbers and please understand we have 20% Value Added Tax on top of everything else here in the UK, a Panigale S with ABS is approx 20,000GBP and a Panigale S Tricolore is approx 23,500GBP. Which ever way you look at it, it's a great deal of money. The worst thing is as soon as you take it out of the Dealres the VAT has been lost so 20% down from the start. Did it put me off, hell no I just used Man Logic again.
