nice job, why didn't you buy the S in the first place, just the Ohlins fromnt and rear must be the difference between the Base price and the S.

Better than the DES Ohlins. Most who track their bike end up going that route due to better adjustability with the FGRT's. Plus modding a bike is a thrill in its own. Going through the transformation phase is more rewarding for most (including myself) than the end result.

I agree modding a bike is half the excitement owning a new bike. I bought an R only because I wanted a new bike that didnt really need anything done to it as i have spend soooo much $$ on all my prev bikes doing them up and (losing a ton of $$ as well :)) Will I end up spending $$ on the R .. yes already have - new Mirrors (Veloce L - not impressed with quality) Alarm, Pretty Fairing screws, new pegs - thats about it really - have no intention of spending anymore rather use the $$ for new tires lol. Good on you for doing a build to suit you mate, at the end of the day its you riding the bike not all these other guys :)

I agree, I didn't buy the S because I didn't like the wheels and would change them, and I don't like the Chinese style Christmas tree front lights, (in fact I dislike all these new vehicles with the led's 4 or 2 wheels)

I got a good deal on a 6 mth old base and can spend £5000 before I come to the price of a S of the same standard, that's money for wheels and and Ohlins of a higher spec. Plus I like to make the bike my own, I spend more time fiddling than riding them, but I was curious if I was the only one who felt that the S for the extra cash didn't give me what I wanted and went with the base abs, time cash and a better bike in the end!

Got a TTX for my base and it's way better than OEM Ohlins on my buddy's R. Got the cartridges instead of the forks which I regret a little now 'cause the forks would have stayed with me.

Chinese style Christmas tree lights? You may need to elaborate on exactly what that means. Essentially, you're saying you dislike LED lighting systems and their advantages (brighter, safer, more durable, longer lasting) because they resemble lights on a Chinese Christmas tree?

Regarding the second bolded statement, I'd imagine it's all dependent on the intended use of the bike. There are many threads covering price and value justification for the various 1199 trims.

Looking good, are the Ohlins lighter than the BASE forks?

Don't have exact data, but I doubt it. The Marzocchi RAC 50 Light forks are the only road forks that have aluminum stanchions (Ohlins FGRT use Ti-Nitride coated steel sliders), which is why they are 50 mm to keep the same amount of stiffness as steel units. From Ducati USA website about the base 1199 forks:

"The 1199 Panigale carries the brand new Marzocchi pressurised fork with 50 mm upside down legs. Exceedingly lightweight, it has anodised aluminium legs and forged fork axle lugs in aluminium. Fully adjustable in compression and rebound and spring preload, it features a pressurised hydraulic system that utilises a smaller amount of oil for each leg, a factor that significantly contributes to a weight reduction."

Base vs s or R

I really was not a fan of the eltronic part of adjusting the suspenion. As I learned more about the OEM Ohlins that came on the bike vs what was offered direct from Ohlins, the after market looked to be the better performer. Now that I have both the F&R and after examining the quality and details, I'm glad I made the choice to go after market.
As others have said, it's also fun to make it "your own" a better way to understand and learn about the mechanics of the bike.

FYI this set up will be primarily for track use.

Those Marzocchis were supposed to be "da $h!t" and when working they actually are. Too bad they blew up all the time.

They are "da ...." with my Bitubo ECH-29 Nitrogen fork cartridges, haha!

Awesome bike, OP, sorry for the diversion.

Nice work so far. If you don't mind me asking, how much did Kyle Racing charge you for the Forks and Shock?

My 2 cents...

First and formost, do what ever blows your hair back, buy a base, an R what ever. Secondly, I don't doubt the quality of the aftermarket, but to say the OEM Ohlins aren't good is a bit of a misnomer. I got to spend a weekend with Dave Moss working on my bike and basically he said what many don't quite get... Aftermarket is always better cause it will be valved better and sprung to your riding style. With that he said the stock Ohlins on the S/R will get you within 4 seconds of any lap record on any track, (yes they're that good). You will have to get a re valve job to get the extra 4 seconds.

I can only speak for myself when I say I won't see within 4 sec of a lap record on any track...lol. So I was happy buying an R. I wanted the engine upgrade and exhaust which IMHO is why you buy an R over anything anyway.

I spoke to several guys and a TTX aftermarket is only marginally better than the OEM, forks well that's a valving and spring issue.

Good luck with your build and keep posting pics.

I wouldn't exactly call the " bold statements" just walking the dog this morning and seen a Renault Clio with the led's in the grill looked like boy racer bolt goods, the S1000 with it flashing rear lamp might amuse my kids, for me if you allow my opinion they look cheap and gimmicky and normal lights are better quality, brightness, my 749 has great lights don't need brighter, safety, if you can't see a halogen light coming your not going to see a led, durability, I don't seem to change bulbs often in all my cars and bikes, can count on one hand. I like HID and the weight of the complete kit is not going to make any difference and they don't fit on a Christmas tree too well but I half to admit that I like the rear light on my 1199.
My opinion on lights up to you what like have on yours!
Second bold statement, isn't a "bolded" statement, it was my choice and ideas when I came to buying a bike last year, if want a "bold statement" the choice was a top 1198, S,SP or Corse but my opinion was that the lowest spec 1199 still beats the best 1198, but the 1198 is better looking for my taste in my opinion!
For the LED, check how ugly the new Range Rover looks on the front, the Audi's running lights, and now from Korea the Kia!

You seem to be either caught up or confused with my use of the word "bold". Just to clarify, it wasn't my intention to state that what you said was bold in meaning, but that I was specifically referring to the quoted statements that had been made bold for your convenience. If bold can be informally used as verb, and it is, then the past participle form "bolded" would be acceptable.

Regardless, I appreciate the response but was looking for more clarification on your referencing a Chinese Christmas tree, as that is not a concept I am familiar with. I disagree with your assessment on safety differentials. There is a good deal of literature supporting the theory that bright gear, bright lights, and lighting arrangement are all effective means for making riders more conspicuous and safer on the road.

This is consistent with the information I have gathered as well. Aftermarket is not going to be "better" per se, but it may be better valved for track use and can of course be sprung specifically for your riding style. I would, however, be interested to know the exact differences, if any, in valving for these units if anyone has that information available.

Considering the OP's intention from the beginning was to primarily use this bike on the track, I believe his decision to go base and improve via aftermarket is ideal.

Thanks for the reply, few years back when Audi first brought out LED running lights the kids say whow cool, I said to them looks like some dude just stole my Christmas lights and bolted to his car, since then its the family joke when we see them, I have BMW M3 with HID and they do look the business, I see on threads here that guys are fitting them to their bikes and they look great and give out a pile of light, I just think the LEDs look cheap and gimmicky and belongs to the Japanese manufacturing market.
