1st DIY oil change good news/bad news

Just wondered how you know you can't put more than 3k miles on before you think you need an oil change?

Other than sending an oil sample for viscosity testing (google blacklabs..I use them every year) there is no way to know exactly when you have "crossed over" and should change the oil asap.
I am just going by a self made dead line and I am sure I almost always change oil WAY before it needs to be changed.

Modern Synthetic oils are ridiculous (in a good way) , I had the oil in my E39 M5 tested after 7800 miles (14 months) and it was at 88% viscosity. We can get into chemical engineering debate and what those viscosity levels really mean, but its safe to say that even after 14 months and 7800 of not-so-easy driving, the oil was is=n very good shape.

I've always paid for dealer oil changes, really just for the full service documentation. But in selling my BMW S1000RR, I've found that prospective buyers haven't really been interested in the fully dealer-serviced and documented service history.

I'm also paying about 45-50% taxes, so my first service (which albeit included a radiator flush to track-friendly water wetter) cost $525, meaning I have to make $1000 to cover that cost.

Once you put that into realistic terms, I ought to put my tools and workspace to some productive use.

Yes, I have the means to just pay the dealer. But isn't the fastest way to become poor is to throw money around senselessly?
