2014 Ducati 1199S coolant sprays out of weep hole hard at high RPM

Hi everyone. It’s been awhile since my last posts. I’m now having a problem with my friend’s 1199S in Vietnam. Everytime he rev’ed up to 8-9k rpms, the coolant shot out of the weep hole. It’s been leaking slowly before and I did the researches to see that it was supposed to be “normal” per Ducati :). But this spraying coolant at higher rpm seems unnormal. Took it to the dealer here in Vietnam and the tech said it’s the water pump is bad, possibly the plastic gearing too.
I’m thinking about plugging this weep hole :) cuz I don’t think the water pump is bad. If it’s bad, the engine would have overheated when the bike in traffic (here, we ride our bikes at 3rd gear at the highest since the streets are crowded)

Please chime in if you’ve dealt with this problem. Thank you.

remove and replace coolant pump is the starting point.Hopefully that solves it.Super Legg has a threaded weep port with nipple to hose to ground. Not a good idea to dump slippery coolant on road in front of rear tire though.Plugging weep hole is probably bad idea as pressure could build up in the coolant weep cross over channel and create a leak in the sealant joint between the cases and start the coolant going into the engine instead.Remember that the pressure can go up to the relief pressure of the radiator cap.More coolant that leaks out means less and less coolant in system to cool everything.Have the pump replaced and cross your fingers.I have read the service bulliten regarding this.Leaves me wondering how Honda,BMW,Kawasaki, ect ect ect can make a coolant pump that is not designed to leak.

very small amount of coolant leak that dries around the weep hole is considered normal. However if the coolant is dripping and pooling on the ground, then that's a sign the water pump should be replaced. One member in the following link mentioned the water pump replacement fixed his coolant leak.

Water pump is bad......do you really want to cook your motor and have a complete failed water pump.
Mine doesn't weep at all or shoot out.

The reason it can have a tiny weep is due to the seal and lubrication.

Thanks to all that replied. So I guess I’d have to replace that water pump. Was just reasoning with myself that the pump is good since it’s still circulating coolant, and the leak was just a faulty design or bad seal, gasket, etc. :) Again, thank you all.

Like with a old car? Where a bad water pump doesn’t mean the impeller isn’t turning just means the bearing wore enough that the seal can no longer do its job? Ducati should raise their low msrp so they could stop cutting corners : )

The pic is for someone else.

the weep hole is to let you know that the inner bearing seal is compromised and coolant is mixing with the bearings lubrication.

abby...abby normal
