I bet throwing a leg over it is still like straddling a yacht. Widest literbike on earth.

Cars and bikes are always conservatively tuned from the factory. They can put out the exact same bike from one year to the mext, all the way down to the same nuts n bolts and lean out the factory tune a tad bit and get a few more ponies out of it. Pig rich tunes are common. Instead of focusing on an inaccurate claim of a high hp number, they should focus on making that boat lighter. Panigale style!

Do people really buy roadgoing superbikes by looking at the horespower figures?
I have never known anyone that went "I bought this one over X because this has 10 extra hp even though I like the looks of X better" or "even though X felt better when I test rode it".
Have I been hanging out around the wrong bush?

I think they do..... The bragging rights count for a lot in this market....

I will have to wait an see the 2015 in its final form, but looks very similar to current bike. I am sure Yamaha will drop some 20Lbs off it. As someone else said, the current bike is pig heavy.

I do like how the R1's cross-plane engine sounds and it actually looks good in race bike form. In street dress though, it almost ties BMW's S1000 for the butt ugly award. IMHO.

Absolutely. I know so many poseurs that bought the S1000RR because its the baddest bike out there and wins all the comparisons. They bought it especially because it makes the most HP. About 98% of them are absolutely mediocre at best in terms of riding skill and will never come close to being able to use 75% of what the bike can do. Sad.

If HP didn't sell, then Yamaha never would have come out with the R1 after the CBR900RR debuted in 1993. The Busa wouldn't exist, the ZX-14 would have outdone the Busa, etc. etc. etc.

But R1 was a total change on the ever-softer Blade, not just in hp, but more on weight reduction and handling.

But for choosing a bike just for an extra 5hp over the other seems too vain even to me.
Even all my friends who got Busa or Zx14 are doing it because they like the look, or riding position, or comfort (especially over tiny superbikes).

P.s.
I live down under.

Hell yes I do. I dont need to most powerful but as a Yamaha go I will not go near the current R1. Its a joke without dumping about 8 grand into it. It is the heaviest bike with the least power in the class. I even thought about getting a Kawi!! I hate Kawi, I feel like they are junk. I want a light powerful bike and does not cost a ton to be competitive, like most guys.

Kawasaki aside, most jap bikes have stagnated since 2008. Honda's and Yamaha's may be bringing home the bacon in Motogp but the technology does not trickle down to their models. it is time for Yamaha to release something ground breaking.

I think some people do. When the s1000rr came out, it became the talk of the town because of the 193hp rumour. When Panigale's where initially marketed (all of us remember the checkmate thing right?), they boasted it has 195 horse power.

I think their marketing arm has determined that a lot of people are interested in HP figures

Still a Yamaha...

IMHO all bikes are designed to perform their specific purpose. So even if it Still A Yamaha, I am pretty sure their bike has some good points. To each his own but to dismiss other bikes just because of the brand can be futile . Remember in 2000 when Honda released the rc51 vtwin? Majority of the Ducatisti that time dismissed "Its just a honda" , well in that year Collin Edwards left ducati 998r's to dust.

I don't see many S1000RRs at the track. At Barber t weke ago and at PabIR this past Sunday, I may have seen 6 BMWs total. I saw dozens of Panigale's 1199/899. Too many posers on BMWs.

I agree with almost everything said about the current R1. In street form, wow is it ugly, heavy, and power delivery isn't great. Sounds good though.

That being said, I have a 2013 R1 that I absolutely stole for almost nothing since it needed some work. Track body, tuning, and a few upgrades internal and external makes it feel completely different. And I'm willing to push this bike way past what I would do on my 1199R...at least at this point.

If it goes down....I buy some parts and put it back together. I'd have to go on a three day binge if I laid the Pain down.

Btw...I'm not close to the limits of either bike....yet. :)

what kills me is when you hear a squid at a bike night say omg i love the R1's they are so fast...i feel like i hear more about the R1 being fast than any other jap bike and it just really pisses me off because as mentioned, its the heaviest and slowest. love the sound with decent slip ons tho...gotta give em that...but does anyone else feel like they hear erroneous claims about R1s like i do more so than any other bike??? lol. i make sure not to ride with anyone where that statement comes out of their mouths...

I cannot even count how many times I've been asked "does that thing keep up with an R1?"
