Its funny to me that every performance auto seems to be shrinking displacement and increasing power yet with bikes we just keep making the engines larger. Just a thought

They did that in the early 90's as well. I had a Talon turbo 4 to compete with stock 5.0 Mustangs.

Makes me immediately think of the cover of Road & Track in July '86 with the Porsche 959...

that's exactly it. 955cc? Makes me think of a very old Triumph. But 959? That's an "exotic" number. But they probably didn't think past how all Panigale model numbers end in "9", so 955cc becomes 959. 1285cc becomes 1299.

they have forced induction, which is unusual and not well developed over many years for motorcycles. Compression ratios are already very high, so the only route left really is to add displacement.

But also note that this is in Ducati's case, with L-twin motors.

1000cc inline fours have seen progressively greater power numbers, without changing displacement. Engines built to withstand higher RPMs helps there.

When the 1098 came out (which was 1099cc) they said they couldn't call it a 1099 because no one in the U.S. would buy it since to all of us 1099 means "Taxes" and it's a negative connotation! ;)

Nope.

So what does 898 and 955 connote vs. 899 and 959 respectively?

Were they trying to get away from the 848 so they called it a 899 instead? Perhaps they are trying to stick with the XZ99 nomenclature?

Basically yes.

They wanted to distance the 1098 from the 999. Meaning they didn't want people to associate the two. The changes in numbers is to distance that particular model from a different model.

In other words, they didn't want it to seem like it was the same bike with more displacement.

Not necessarily true in club racing. In Wera and ccs, the big bikes are unlimited OEM displacement. That's how the 1199 and 1299 are legal.

True.

But that isn't what he was getting at.

The 959 will be legal in the B (750cc classes), that is what he meant. He was saying that the 959 will be legal in all the same classes the 899 was legal in.

Yes, for HWT and A and F1 classes, it is unlimited OEM displacement.

Part of me thinks they are doing this with plans of introducing a new model later on. I have a feeling at some point we will have 1300cc, 1000cc and 750cc Panigale options.

969 would've be been an exotic number, who wouldn't want a piece of that. "nine six nine"

The 959 will have a side exhaust it would seem. Interesting to see how they will make that work.

It's like bikes are evolving away from the mid class, i.e Suzuki GSXR600, 750, 1000. Eventually what you will have is a 190 bhp 'mid' class superbike with a hyperbike catagory up at around the 230 bhp, kind of like what they did with supercars and now hypercars...... Where do they get off?

More to the point, do we get a new lesser model to fill the gap?

Hey guys i cant wait for the 959 - we test rode the 899 very bad bike the rear sets are so far back i felt like I was bending over getting ready for some guy to ram it up my bum hole. The 899 had no power low end or mid range it was a disappointment.

We're are trying to buy the 959 for my wife she didn't like the 899 rear sets position :( the Ducati dealership didn't even mention the 959 to us 2 days ago when we were there trying to buy the 899. Very disapointed with their dishonesty after all we've bought 3 new Harleys and a 1299s off them in 2 years.

Anyway when the 959 comes out we are going to buy it from another dealer !!!

I like the specs, just cannot believe they moved away from their beautiful exhaust design.
