When the 1098 came out (which was 1099cc) they said they couldn't call it a 1099 because no one in the U.S. would buy it since to all of us 1099 means "Taxes" and it's a negative connotation!
So what does 898 and 955 connote vs. 899 and 959 respectively?
Were they trying to get away from the 848 so they called it a 899 instead? Perhaps they are trying to stick with the XZ99 nomenclature?
Not necessarily true in club racing. In Wera and ccs, the big bikes are unlimited OEM displacement. That's how the 1199 and 1299 are legal.
that's exactly it. 955cc? Makes me think of a very old Triumph. But 959? That's an "exotic" number. But they probably didn't think past how all Panigale model numbers end in "9", so 955cc becomes 959. 1285cc becomes 1299.
