2018 V4S with oil in the radiator/expansion tank

Hi, have a new to me 2018 V4S, it's had a rough life - picked it up from auction at the end of last year as a salvage title with crash damage - but was just cosmetic/easy fix stuff.

Got it all back together and running nice without too much effort this spring - Ducati really seem to have come a long way in ease of assembly since they got bought by Audi

Downside is, when flushing the coolant, I found oil at the top of the radiator - not a ton but enough to basically fill the neck of the radiator and some had also made it into the expansion tank.

I've heard of plenty of issues with the V-twin Panigales having leaks in the water to oil intercoolers - leading to oil in the coolant - but haven't seen so much on the V4's getting oil in the water (separate oil cooler so no leak path to the coolant).

Was wondering if it could be something to do with the water pump (read lots of issues with that) but am thinking that what I've got is a leak from some part of the pressure side of the oil circuit into the coolant circuit - and not sure if the water pump has a pressurized oil supply to it (haven't found a diagram showing the oil circuit). Seems like it would be unusual if it had but if anyone can confirm/deny would be great.

No leaks from the engine (well, some weeping from the front cam cover but I know how to fix that), all runs great (just incredible machines), with no warning lights.

Any thoughts from anyone?

Am guessing that head gaskets are first thing to check, but just asking in case anyone has come across similar before and able to share before I get elbows deep in it...

Failing water pump can lead to oil and water mixing on these bikes, especially earlier models. I'd check that before messing with the heads.

There have been a few posts recently about failed water pumps resulting in a bit of oil in the coolant.

I would look at the pump before pulling the heads off

Thanks both! Pulled the pump, it looked OK tbh, no obvious leak paths but ordering a new one anyway. Will pull the tank/airbox next and see what the hoses look like in the V...

When the water pump fails the heads overheat and warp causing gasket failure. If you have oil in your coolant you are likely not far away from a head gasket failure. A customer of mine had this issue on his V4R and fortunately for him he bought the extended warranty! Pro Italia fixed it under warranty; was a $12,000 job w/o the coverage. My V4 streetfighter had this water pump failure but I caught it right away and had the parts replaced when the bike was very new and no issues since.

Just closing this one out, turns out it was porosity in the rear cylinder head casting. Replaced it with a secondhand (later version) and touch wood, has been fine ever since.
