30 MPG, where art thou?

I think (for those with the lower average of mpg) that alot has to do with the breaking in of the engine. The first 600 miles are very important for the rings and seals to seat properly. Not goose necking (rev'ing up in neutral mainly to hear the exhaust) and not riding above 5-6k rpm (Ducati says 6k but I always aimed for 5k), not just riding in top gear for miles on the highway for extended time (just to rack up miles to get to 600 faster) use each gear and dont commit to using just one, performing proper engine breaking in every gear (not good for mpg but great for breaking in engines), and ensuring proper enigne warm up before riding (in my humble opinion) should help your enigne break in and perform at its peak potential. I'm averaging 35mpg on a normal commute, 32 riding harder for fun.

Im getting in the high 20's (28-ish) and Im commuting in LA traffic during the weeks and the canyons on Saturday and Sundays

my Monster gets much better mileage, and my Harley gets incredible mileage in comparison.

That being said, i dont ride those other bikes much any more, I will take the low (relatively) MPG any day for the pleasure this bike gives me

For those worried about low 20s, I'm getting 22-24 commuting to work during the week. Granted, I only work a few miles from my house, so it's city roads the whole way, and I'm not gentle on the throttle. I'm lucky if I can get past 2nd gear.

I haven't done much highway over the winter but last year I was getting in the mid to high 30s for longer distance rides.

I forgot to mention what happened to me yesterday. My low fuel light was on and I ran out of gas right around the 9-10 mile counter. Wasn't expecting it because I went close to 25 the last time I ran out of fuel.

I've been riding it through the winter and it's been cold, not sure if that has anything to do with it. Once it gets warmer I'm thinking about going in for an oil and filter change, even though I have ~4000 miles before my next service

Word.

Has anyone who has really bad mileage changed their air filter? I went from 30s and 40s (even one ride at just over 50mpg) to the mid/high 20s. Then replaced the air filter and haven't seen 20s since.

The smog controls pump a lot of gunk back into the airbox...so even if you have low miles it could still be fouled. My stock one 'looked' fine, but was not. Could be an easy (and relatively cheap, compared to gas) fix.

In between 28-32 (uK) mpg it's not bad for the beast obviously you can make it higher by riding less lunatic.

I test ride an aprilia tuono 1100 rr with normal riding under 6000 rpm it was doing 17-19 mpg(uK) see that's sad ! Such a great bike but a motorcycle shouldn't drink that much petrol.

Just test ride ducati multistrada MVT in city it was doing about 43 mpg and highways 54 mpg so ducatis getting better with fuelling must say!

I think I'm 30ish depending on riding stil of course. All I can say is my RSV4 is worse than the Pani for MPG at the track. I use almost two full tanks compared to probably a tank and a half at the track doing six 20min sessions.
