I went to a lightweight 41T kit with a quick change rear. Of course, it came with a longer DID 520 ZVMX chain. IIRC, its something like two links longer.

Can I safely go back to a 39T sprocket without changing the length of the chain? Would anything really be effected chassis wise?

You wheelbase will be slightly longer. You'll have to move the rear wheel back a little to accommodate the longer chain.

And of course ride height will also change with that same adjustment. Probably
a lot more than you would experience during a normal chain life.

would it not be possible to keep around two chains, a 103 link (104 with master) and a 105 link (106 with master), then just punch out the master link when changing chains? You'd need a new master link each time you do this, of course.

It would be possible, but would require buying another chain.

I thought the stock chain was 106 total.

Oops. Nevermind, it is 525 with 104 total in the manual.

What would the effect of a longer wheelbase have? No track riding, only street. I have to think we're talking about fractions of an inch here.

in theory more stability, slower steering and better power to the ground (longer swingarm)...

by in reality .... all!!

if you're going from a 520 alloy back to steel stock you might notice that more...but maybe not.

Track records seem to get broken on the Panigale when the rear axle goes further back. At least with the 1199.

Should be able to get away with a 39/41 using the same chain and proper adjustment. I Others have done it, just not sure what the exact number of links were.

Just got back from wild ride with 41T for the first time after two years on 39T.
The difference is subtle, but the bike definitely felt like on beast mode. Lighter, more freely, and get out of speed limit very.....very....quick...ly.
Traction and stability through and out of corners seem better too (mind you this is road, not track yet). Not sure if that is because I put 2 extra links on the chain, keeping the wheelbase long and proper.
Turn in is just normal.
I love it. I don't think e 39T is worth keeping, unless your hockenheim, assen, phillip island, and nurburgring are your local tracks?

P.S. 104 links standard chain vs 106 links recommended for 41T?

I tried to fit a 41T (with 15T front) with a 104 link chain. With the rear wheel ALL the way forward, the chain was simply too short. Very frustrating as I just needed about 1/4" more.

So I'm guessing if people have gotten this to work, they went the other way - 106 link chain, then when going to a 39T rear sprocket, extending the rear wheel eccentric which probably goes back enough.

All I can say from experience is that with 104 links, you'll fit 39T, and a 40T will fit too. 41T....nope.

I will be going 41T as soon as the winter draws and I start a list of jobs
