999 or 848??

Hello everyone,

I have been around here for a few months but never made a post since I don't own any ducati or have any 1199 on order. But since I was little boy, I love motorcycles, specially those italian beauties with the name "Ducati" on the tank.

Till now, I never had the opportunity to have a Ducati. But I think this is the right time. I'm not that experienced with superbikes so I'm planning on buy a used one and when I feel more confident with superbikes I would upgrade to a new one, hopefully a 1199.

But for now, since I don't have much experience with superbikes I think that even a 1198 could be too much for a beginner in this kind of bikes.

So there is a dealer in my area that has a black 999 from June 2010 for sale (the bike was new and untouched for a long time and was just sold and registered in 2010), and also has a matt black 848 with termis from October 2010.

I know that this is a very personal choice and I will try to test ride the two bikes to find which one I prefer, but I would like to know what are your thoughts on which one an amateur on this kind of bikes should choose.

Aestetically I prefer the 848 but I have to say that I do find the 999 in black very atractive too and it is not that common around here to see a black 999.

I also have to say that the mileage and the price is about the same on the 999 and 848.

Your opinion will be much appreciated ;)

I would go with the 848. I would have bought one if I didn't get the 1199. Especially that corsa edition simply beautiful. Never rode either but personally from the technical point of view and appearance i would go with the 848.

I agree, go with 848.

It is more civilized than the 999 and more importantly it has the same powerband as the 1199 below 8000rpm.

In the aftermarket, you will find more parts for the 848 and it truly is beautiful.

Lastly, you will learn a very important lesson about buying motor vehicles, never buy a new vehicle, you lose 25% - 50% of your money very quickly. In superbikes you usually can save 50% if you let some else ride the first 1000-2000 miles.

Good luck

How can you say that

If its all about the $ then go buy a huysong piece of .... and wallow in the depreciation you've saved.

Otherwise, buy the latest, hottest and sexiest piece of metal and enjoy it :D

Someone else can count their savings when I'm done with my fun:cool:

Maybe that sounded abrasive. Either you budget stretches to new, or it stretches to new-1yr depreciation, or new-2yrs dep.

Either way, pay your money, choose your choice, but don't bash the guys that pony up for new..... unless you fancy coming back next year.

Easy, 848 easier to ride, 999 will be harder than the 1198! I feel that your wanting the 999 more, as many say it is hideous , although I feel it's rather unique and that bike was unstoppable on the track! Bottom line the 848 is easier but if you like the 999 get it, just because others say its easier doesn't mean you can't learn it...just saying!

Hahahaha! Well said Xbox! otherwise it's like saying obey the speed limit , don't really ride your bike...

Has nothing to do with budget but has everything to do with value.

I guess I hit a nerve, but you have to ask yourself, why?

As for obeying the speed limits, I have a hard time keeping my 1098R under 100mph on the straights and my knee from dragging on the curves. But then again, I have nothing to prove…

As for value, I would take my used 1098R over a new 1199S any day - that is an easy trade. The real question is will Ducati fix the 1199 so they can come out with an 1199R. THAT I might buy new.

Thing is "value" is totally subjective.

I'm 100% happy to have paid the sticker price for my bike.

Would I have been even happier to have paid 25-50% less - hell yes!!!

Is that possible on this planet today - hell NO

So, decision to make:

1) Pay money for this BEAUTIFUL yet depreciating asset. Offset depreciation against fun and ownership experience.

2) Buy something used, same idea as (1) but with less financial pain

3) Invest in something that will appreciate

Decision I always make is (1) for many bikes and even more cars.

Its my passion, it just flows through my veins.

The funny thing is...people that don't own an 1199 are always on this forum with their two cents on why they don't own one...sounds like you wish you had one but couldn't afford it so now you bash the people that are riding one presently...oh yea....those people also talk about buying the 1199r when they know dam well they couldn't afford a base smh....one thing ill never do is get on a forum if I don't possess or intend to possess what the forum is about....I talk about what I live.....my 2 cents

By the way.....I would go with the 999....just because its way more rare....there is a reason I sold my 1098 to purchase the 1199....but I kept my 749 and will never sell it unless I come across a 749r which to me is the best all around bike Ducati ever produced :D

Is this directed to me? I really don't know what is the problem with my question. If you look attentively this forum has a 1199 Panigale section and, among other sections, has also a Motorcycle Talk section where you can talk about motorcycles in general.

If you read my initial question you see that I just asked for your thoughts on this subject, I didn't bash anyone. If I can afford a 1199? At this moment, sure not, but I think that it is not because of that that I can't participate in this forum.

But even though I could afford one, I probably wouldn't buy one since I don't have many miles done on sports bike and don't want to spend such a big amount of money on a brand new bike that would be my first superbike, and you know... .... happens when you don't expect. So I prefer to go step by step till I reach a certain level of skills with superbikes that allow me to ride one knowing what I'm doing.

Anyway, thanks for your opinion too;)

I'm actually with you on taking it easy....with ur bike purchase....started out with a 749 which really even that was too big for a first bike

The best way to address your comments is to reiterate post #19 "Is the 1098 more fun?"

After much research, I bought the 1098R for the same price as a 1199S. I love the bike, it runs perfectly, titanium vales, sand cast ect. The bike is as light as the 1199, has a better powerband than the 1199, meaning a flat torque curve, and the only reason the 1199 has a higher HP rating is it rev's higher than the 1098R. Unless, you ride at redline the 1199 will feel underpowered.

Ergonomically, 1098R is more comfortable than my S4RS Monster and feels much safer at speed. With that said, you have to ride the 1098R with very light hands similar to riding a Thoroughbred. With light hands the bike is super stable and very fast - you can not muscle through curves, if you do be prepared to be punished.

The 1199 is the most beautiful bike Ducati has ever made but I think the 1098R/1198R is the best bike Ducati has ever made.

Funilly enough, the guy that I bought the bike off,...has bought an 1199s and said he regreted selling the bayliss,...in his words,..he missed the bottom end and the mid range grunt of the 1098r,...about the same top end he said,...but the bike has the corse cam kit in it.

Back to Tricolore...

My 2 cents...Value is buying the best superbike money can buy. I care more about performance than having the latest or greatest. With that said, the Panigale is beautiful, as a financial trader I can buy what ever I want, but I won't buy something just because it is pretty, if that was the case I would be buying Facebook stock.

Ducati has made some big claims, granted it was marketing, but someone has to say the Emperor isn't wearing any clothes.

Regarding Ducati claims, are you saying the 1098R is lighter and more powerful than the 1199?

I get your not a new bike guy, so please try and realise how this MAY taint your view. Like I said, when I'm riding the 1299 Hybrid Eco Efficiency, you can tell me how much better value the 1199R is :D

It's all good, we all love Ducati, just in different ways. Keep it rubber side down.
