The disc lock is still the most effective low cost device. If both wheels are disc'd and the bike is in an area inaccessible to large vehicles then your already making an easy job quite difficult. Not sure I really want to bump into anyone who can pick up and carry off 180KGs :)
Anyone found any discs or u-lock solutions that can be carried on the bike (ie underseat etc)?

You're soooooo wrong.
Just take two skateboards, put the locked bike onto them and roll it away. That's how it's done here.
 
Yeah unfortunately if real thieves want your bike it's gone. Best defense is people not knowing its there. If your bike is in a public parking garage it's not a matter of if but when. Thieves here in LA are using-portable pneumatic tools and compressed liquid nitrogen. They troll forums for information on each model as well as hiding places for LoJack. A private locked garage is your best defense!

I did hear bad stories about LA. I guess I need to be careful when I ride down there when I move to Cali.
