Best Backpack?

Kriega R25 for me. Deceptively large, not 100% waterproof in a big storm but will keep contents dry 99% of the time and exceptionally comfortably. I can carry laptop, iPad, gym kit and its heavy when you lift it up but, cliched I know, you won't know it's on when you get it on your back, easy to put on and very rugged. Only downside is if you like to carry pack over one shoulder whilst off the bike - it tends to slip off. Other than that you can't go wrong and over the years it'll be money well spent.

I just used a Quicksilver backpack. Bought it at a Gander Mountain. Used to have a BugOut backpack. I ride with one almost every time I go out.

The BugOut Gear backpack was awesome. It could hold a lot of stuff. I put my visor, rain gear, camera, groceries, couple two liters of cola... you get the idea. Had that thing for a while, finally seem ripped near the zipper. But seriously though I used to put my groceries in there when I would go to meijer... Check out the BugOut Gear sometime. Love those bags.

The Quicksilver backpack is smaller and I can still put my visor, rain gear, camera and it will only be half full. Has a cooler pack for refreshments built into the bag :D Anyways, it is about as tall as a laptop (I put it in there sometimes) and can fit several full size text books in there. Just to give you an idea of scale.

I also did something most people haven't done. I put my radar detector in a camera pouch and velkro'd it to my shoulder strap. So the radar detector sits on my shoulder facing forward and can detect from the rear too (Valentine One radar). I hooked up a cigarette lighter cable that is simply an adapter to the battery tender and ran it up into my bag. I can plug in anything that uses a cigarette lighter plug, radar detector, cell phone charger, usb, etc. and then from that I have one wire running from the power plug to the detector, and another to the concealed display set up below my dash. So I see it below my speedo, but I hear it on my shoulder. Plus I never forget it when I get off the bike because the cable just disconnects when I walk away. So no one can steal it.

In the photo you'll see the wire running next to my foot (cigarette lighter/ battery tender cable adapter) runs into the bag where I have the cigarette lighter power cable plugged in. On it are two phone cable plugs, and one goes to the radar detector (bag on my shoulder) and the other goes underneath my arm and into the concealed display (black square underneath my speedo) This is a sloppy hook up on that day. Normally the wires are tucked into the bag and the radar is on the other shoulder now facing more parallel. Bag in the photo is the Quicksilver bag (Is a lot bigger when it's full)

Wow - how did you get the shot? Some long pole sticking off your bike? :D I have the Valentine remote on my Beemer, but was thinking of remotely mounting the new Cobra under the headlight interfaced to my iPhone. Can you show a pic of where/how you mounted the Valentine remote on your Pani?

I was riding with the "Racing club" here at MSU to Cider Mills that day. We have a "Riding club" (Bikes) and a "Racing club" (Cars) group page. Kept raining off and on. They were driving by all the cars (and my bike) and taking pictures. You can see the remote up front underneath my speedometer in the picture. I simply used a velkro stick pad that comes with the V1 radar to hold it to the fairing stay. (Won't fall off) I can take a close up shot sometime soon so you can see.

Ok, so to beat a dead horse. (this is what I do in the winter), I've narrowed down to the Alpinestars tech aero, or the Kreiga R25. Both quality, same pricepoint. I like thee harness on the R25, but also like the features of the Alpinestars. Has anybody happened to have both of these to compare? And does anybody know if there is a difference between the two on whether they will scratch the tank or the tail?

Thanks again everybody.

I got the Tumi one on Ebay new with tags at almost 50% off if you have the patience to wait for it

I also have the Tumi Ducati one.
Love it and take it on lots of trips (no motorcycle) but also wear it on the bike and find it very comfortable and great looking.
But yea....the price is salty.

Kreiga R30 for me.
Totally waterproof (i`ve tested that) plenty of space and you can compress it down to uber small for a day pack.
Has a built in back comfort section and takes all the weight on your chest rather than on the shoulders.
2 smallish outer pockets, also waterproof.
I use it for when i`m away for 5 days on euro trackdays as it will compress down fully packed to handluggage size :)

Kreiga all the way. I have no idea what material they use, but it's totally waterproof (even the zippers), takes crazy abuse without tearing and looks new no matter what. I'm very impressed with what I've owned from them.

Went with the OGIO No Drag Mach 5. Great bag holds your visors, shoe slots, my work laptop safely (main reason i got it). Straps across the chest as well as you can un-clip to drop it to one shoulder. The bag doesn't collapse like most bags and go flat and get out of shape.

Revilla has them for about $160 but Amazon has it for about $20 less.

This is the bag I want but not if the hump on my jacket will interfere. Any thoughts?

Kriegas are the best. Listen to the guys who rate them. All weight on chest,no shoulder pain:) I used mine on 400 mile ride to Cornwall with enough gear for 5 day stay. Rode through rain for half the day, gear was dry. All other packs i"ve used ie, Camelback and a couple of mountaineering brands had shortfalls which showed themselves very quickly, especially at speed. Kriega, you want the best pay for it. Why did you buy a Pani??? Cos its the BEST:D Oh yeah check out the detailing as well, you get alloy adjuster rings and quick release buckles that wouldn"t look out of place on the best grade military gear, quality man. These are made for purpose, all the other wannabe bags are just takes on hiking and cycling kit with badges. I really did my homework before taking on the Kriega, comparing bags and nowt else came close.

I hate this thread. :) I have had my eye on a Kriega for a while now, but I just can't decide which one to get. I thought I was set on the R20, but then a bunch of people recommended the R25 so I was about to get it, but then I decided the straps, etc. looked like they might be too burly and hot for summer. The R20 uses lighter weight/less burly hardware and straps that are more similar to the Arcteryx and Black Diamond packs I ride in now. Do any of you guys find the R25 too hot in the summer with all those thick straps?

No problems at all for me heatwise with the R25 but then I ride in full leathers at all times, unless it is raining or cold. It is also the most comfortable backpack I have ever owned.

Thanks, Marc. I am rewatching the Revzilla videos now and trying to make a final decision.

Edit - rewatched the videos and although I like the looks of the R25's attachment system I think the size may be overkill for me. I don't do overnighters so I usually have phone, wallet, keys, another shield, lunch bag, maybe a tablet, occasionally a pair of shoes or some Chipotle in there. From the videos, the R25 looks like it might be too big for my normal usage.

Edit again - checked and my packs are both 18L so I think the R20 will be perfect and a tad larger than the ones I have now.

Thanks

I have the R25 and did the same thing as you are doing with the R20. If you just need to carry a few things the 20 is good. Frankly though, the R25 isn't huge, its about the same size as a book bag back pack. The harness is substantial though, which is what I like about it. I always wear a leather jacket and it is the easiest bag to put on and secure. I don't feel like they get in the way at all. I can't speak to what it's like in summer, but I don't see the straps as a major contributor to overheating.

Here you go. Just used the same stick pads it came with. I put one on the side and one on the bottom. Sometimes the daylight hits it just right and I cant see so I just flip it. That's why you see that other stickpad on the remote.

Let me know how that R20 goes, I'm in the same boat. Usually just a chance of clothes, some work stuff, not for overnight. I just like that R25 harness up high, but I'm still in limbo. (this is what winter is for, right?)

Lol..true on the winter thing. You'll probably have purchased it and broken it in by the time I make up my mind. I was all set and then started overthinking it again. Since I have two 18L packs that work ok for me, why not buy the bigger one in case I have a need for it? Seems silly to have another smaller pack like the R20 when I already have two in that size range. *sigh*

One day I'll make up my mind.
