BMW HP4 - RACE!! (BMW just got pretty)

My 1199 is track only. I have a 250cc scooter for the city that I sometimes might ride legally, but that was not the point. These top notch sportbikes are only competing in how much above practical use they are capable of performing in the unlikely scenario of all conditions matching. So I see no point in justifying their price or mere existence.

Supply and demand. In todays world they know there are people out there who will buy them...........

Hmmm. Well lets look at RyFly05 response. What makes a bike street legal? First off this board is full of guys who posted about all the various ways to remove emission components so we can omit that part of the conversation. Please chime in if I missed something but I was under the impression that you need at least one side mirror, a headlight, front are rear signals, a license plate and some sort of tread pattern. These hardly constitute a radical alteration to the bike. My 2006 1000rr was a factory HRC kit bike. I put an integrated tail/signal in the tail. A HID Bicycle light in the nose, a couple of little front indicators, two of my micro mirrors and a plate. I registered it in 06 and have been riding it legally registered on the street ever since. My 1299 is basically the same thing. So It would be very easy to make that BMW (sans emissions) something you could register and easily ride on the street without much money at all.

Ed,
In Australia Mr RyFly05 would be correct. We just cannot do what you can do in your state. Each vehicle in Australia has to have an ADR plate attached. That stands for Australian Design Rules. If you do not have that plate then which states that the vehicle complies with all the little rules that Australia mandates then no registration. There are some exemptions for really old bikes that are considered vintage. Imports can also have exemptions after detailed inspections.

Pretty lucky that you can put a reflector and pushbike light on your race bike and register it. We just would not be legally be able to do that here.

Back on topic I like the BWW

amazing what a few tweaks can do. get rid of a few pieces with some ugly lines and all of a sudden, the bmw actually looks pretty good.

i agree 100% that for what you are paying, the overall package of the bmw with the wsbk-spec components is far better than ducati's sl offerings.

bravo bmw!

Toys for the lucky ones. I wish I was one...

This is exactly what this and the SL are. Nothing more. No one is going to drop that kind of money for a race bike. They would build a far better one for far less. The new HP4 does come with some trick stuff but if I were in the market to drop anything over even $50k on a bike for the race track... Money would be better spent elsewhere. These bikes are for those that have big $$ and like to have something exclusive sitting in the garage.

One thing I'd like to point out is that the word superleggera loosely translated means super light.
Its almost exclusively an italian thing . the idea or culture of the making of a bike or car that is simply an exercise in getting the best power to weight ratio on a street legal machine.
lamborgini has something similar.

I wish ducati would build a track only bike - I've been saying for years - almost lost my voice figuratively speaking.

but to compare this (really bad ass) BMW to the SL is with out a doubt, like comparing apples and oranges.

If you look at the market the SL IMO would outsell the BMW because of the people who could possibly buy one and their wants and needs are filled by a street legal exotic sexy italian bike that could possibly sit next to a bunch of other unused italian supercars.

If you were to offer one of these two bikes to me for free I'd pick the ducati all day long.
simply put I just don't need a track bike that has that much coin wrapped up in it .

but If i was Michael Jordan I'd have one of each as my track bitch

If you were MJ, you'd be ridin a gixxer.

Actually...........His streetbike were always custom Ducati's :( Although in his defense, aside from running an AMA team for a while, he was well known to love hitting up trackdays and was quite the crasher by his own admission.

i'm trying to understand who is bmw targeting with this bike (besides the brad pitts of the world with super deep pockets)? for those who are rich and like to hang out at starbucks, you cant cuz its not street legal. for those who are track junkies, is this really the bike you would use--imagine the amount of spares and upgrades you could do with $80k. so are the 750 aimed at racing teams lol? i don't get it.

Collectors and the same type of people who track hypercars. I see a Carerra GT headed to my local track driving down the freeway with the front covered in painters tape all the time.

BMW and Ducati both have bikes for the rich the middle class and the poor... Every bike model and spec has a client that want it and will pay it!im confident peope have been waiting for something like this to counter the superleggera etc. and I believe they built a fantastic machine and aprilia has a program similar to this .. With 500 or even 1500 pieces I'm confident the world has more then 1500 rich people who ride love and appreciate Motorsports .

Yep for sure very well put.

Yesterday I had the chance to make a factory tour where the rear swing arm is currently made for this bike. Unfortunately I was not allowed to take any pictures.

This swing arm is a piece of Art!!!! Simply amazing workmanship. Doesn't stay behind a MotoGP piece. Just beautiful. Lot's of CNC 3D milled parts and Ti components.

To me it looks like BMW has a big lack in sales/marketing competence. If they would do it the Italian way, the SL would look like an overweighted antique :)

It's made by Suter right? I would expect it's probably a stunning example of precision engineering.

Yeah, you're absolutely right. The swing arm is just WOW. If BMW pays the same attention to the other parts of this bike, it's going to be a real racer beast, not just some collector show-off stuff.

Just zooming in on the press pictures, I've noticed tons of things that remind me of the one time I got to see a Mclaren F1 up close. It wasn't so much that the materials or ideas were any different than anyone else. It was attention to detail makes it look like it was built in a clean room with alien technology. Some of the little touches on the BMW remind of me of that. Hopefully some ride reports come out eventually, would love to hear more about it.
