Morning all, went for a ride with some buddies yesterday to the Isle of Wight... recommended for anyone in the UK.
On the ride it struck me how much carbon people add to bikes... I’m maybe a bit old school and have never looked at it unless I have needed to replace a worn/broken part.

Can people share if they’d have added carbon pieces, if so which?
:) Asking for a friend

Thanks

Carbon fibre is an amazing material but it has become a fashion statement as much or more than its functionality or weight saving which is why you see do much badly made bling out there. What is the point of adding a carbon component if its heavier or the strength is unnecessary?
Then there is the cost vs benefit discussion so my take is if you like it then just buy it, but from a pure performance point of view make sure it's been made well and measure the weight vs the component you're "upgrading"

After that it's like getting a tatt, you just have to get another one!

It also depends on what your starting with. I start with nothing so I use carbon on everything same with Ti. For me it’s all functional as I’m starting with nothing. I’m not replacing anything for an aesthetic value.

If I had a showroom bike, I wouldn’t spend money to replace plastic with carbon or any other “look at me” part. You see all these guys buying these showroom bikes then replacing all these parts and trying to sell the take-offs on eBay.

You need to have a game plan on how far you are going to take your “mods”. Buying a 30k motorcycle and dumping 12k in aftermarket parts on it is just goofy. Buy a cheap base, buy the mods, have the bike your really wanted fo a bunch less.

The plastics are fine for the most part and the fibre reinforced ABS fairings are excellent protection, the thing about carbon is that has very strong tensile strength but not so great on compression. From an engineering perspective the beauty of it is in the way you can make it perform by varying the layup schedule, and it's incredible strength to weight when made properly. When I look at the bling brigade I don't see much appreciation for it as a material but as a decoration. Be much cheaper to buy some carbon wrap!

Putting race fairings on my 14R that will never see the track for a few reasons. To start with it got hit by a car and all but 2 pieces of the oem plastic are toast. But what I really have wanted even before that happened was good ram air cold air and to lose the weight of the led headlight. Also like the look of aftermarket alum stay and nice hex flush mount dzus. Turns out the fitment on most of that (glass fairings, stay, and tubes) purdy much sucks. Fine for something that I am gonna low side sooner or later but not cool for street bike. Worst part is that the best fitting tubes only fit oem stay and early body work. So tmrw I am gonna order front and side 1199 fairings from Carbonin. I already have matte carbon front fender (oem) n tail (CI) and will prolly paint these 3 pieces. (Don’t want to be called plastic man). Pretty sad but it looks like the only fairings that fit right are factory or carbon. Good luck with whatever you decide for yours

Don I'm not sure about the 14r but I can get a full set of unpainted oem fairings for about 600 when I last looked. For your bike or for anyone looking to save weight then for sure go for carbon fairings as long as they are made well.

Yeah I know they are avail and fairly cheap. Figured if I am replacing all this at least set it up with one piece sides and some dzus fasteners ya know? I wanted it to look a lil rough and not stock (more old school hot rod less Ducati). And remember the main reason I am doing this is I wanted good ram air. (Large n sealed) I don’t know that these big ducts will even work with that front. Do you? Anyways it’s a carbon thread and I don’t want to derail. I am gonna order carbon and pray it works lol
