Chain tension...??

Hello all,
Is it just me, or do others find it impossible to achieve the recommended chain tension/slack? The manual calls for 50mm-52mm(basically 2”) but it hits the bottom of the swing arm well before the 2” slack is achieved.

Input?

Thanks,
-John

It's just you. Seriously... I've never experienced any issues adjusting the chain, and 50-52mm is the correct figure. The distance is measured midway between the front and rear sprockets. Are you measuring from the correct point?

I took 4mm of slack out of the v2 yesterday following the procedure in the owners manual.

if you don't have the manual, the swingarm has a sticker to show where and how to take the measurement. on the v2, flop the chain and measure from a point in front of the plastic guide mounting screw to the metal of the swing arm to the center of the chain rivet. (45-47mm of 'sag' on that model)

Thanks for the reply Khmer. Just checked again(midway between both sprockets) and the chain touches the bottom of the swing-arm well before 50mm of travel/deflection.

I can't understand it... are you the original owner? If not, what did the previous owner change? Was the rear suspension altered, the chain, the position of the eccentric hub, etc.? In stock trim you shouldn't have any difficulty adjusting the chain tension to spec.

I don't understand your problem either. You should be pushing down on the bottom run of the chain. Hold it in that position. Measure from the bottom of the swingarm.

Crap, it is just me(after reading cmh210’s reply).... I was thinking that I was supposed to be measuring 50mm-52mm of up & down deflection(like on most normal swing-arm bikes), not simply 50mm-52mm of slack/gap from the bottom of of the swing-arm to the lower link rivet(s) on the chain. Classic overthinking maneuve!

Thanks,
-John

Great! ...then you're straight.

Just to give the OP some support, I have had my bike for over seven years and have had the same issue. My mechanic, who is very well respected, has told me that if it’s touching the swing arm it’s fine. Even after he adjusts it, it looks too slack. But it wears well and never had problems. It doesn’t help that the owners manual is not clear. And the owners manual has other blatant mistakes in it!
