That front anti backlash gear is spring loaded. To align it you will need to lock the crankshaft using the crank locking pin tool. You will need to tilt the motor to the side to prevent oil from leaking out of the pin access hole (bike on kickstand will do). Remove the plug. Rotate the crankshaft until you see the notch in the crank through the access hole. Insert the crank holding pin tool and tighten till snug. Slide the clutch basket on until it engages the anti backlash gear, once it does, rotate the clutch basket assembly counter-clockwise and push. The basket will slide in place (dont forget the washer) Remove the pin, install the plug, install the clutch and basket tool, torque to spec. Done deal

Good lord, I would never of thought. I went through the workshop manual like 5 times, googled 20 times, never once saw any mention of that tool or plug. Makes me feel a lot better about myself, that it’s not just “turn the gear until it lines up” haha

Thanks a lot i appreciate it!

Don’t try to put the pin thru the hole that’s visible in yer pic! There is only one hole in the actual primary gear so make sure that’s the one behind the access hole before you drive that pin into anything. Or you can do like I did and remove the clip and throw the springs and the outer part in the trash

The outer piece has exploded on at least one forum member here...

Thanks for the warning, that probably would have been my next approach if I didn’t get any response haha.

I located the plug, found the little
Notch inside the hole on the crankshaft, just gotta hunt down that tool now.

Yep at some point if you have to remove the main case cover for some reason, you can remove the anti-backlash gear all together. I don’t run them either. You can make a usable pin tool from a bolt fairly easily.

What is the purpose of it? I'm sure it has something to do with the name (duh) but I'm not entirely sure what would cause "backlash."

Ok great.

Going to try and macgyver a tool today. Thanks

It’s to remove the “backlash” or the hammering back and forth on the drive gear as the basket gear engages and disengages through engine operation (acceleration/deceleration etc)

Here is one I made before I got the factory tool. M12x1.25

Could you please possibly give me the length of that thread-less area that (I’m assuming) will enter the notch of the crankshaft?
Thanks

The notch is 2.6 mm deep. The pin area that fits in the notch is 3.73mm on the factory tool. The threaded area and lead in area are arbitrary as both these tools work however for reference the lead in area on the factory tool is 9.84mm Dia and 18.5mm L. Thread depth is 4mm.

S&S racing rules!

Does anyone make a standard hub n pressure plate for that bolt together basket? I don’t want a slipper but noticed the springs are already loose in my oem one
