Just wanted to see how many of you have hired a shipper to transport a bike to another part of the country? Do you have any recommendations on shippers or general tips, since I have no experience with this?

I ask because I'm considering pulling the trigger on purchasing RSR Racer's Pani. He lives in Long Island, NY and I in a suburb of Minneapolis, MN. Getting his baby from there to here in the same condition is the biggest concern, so covered transport is the only option for me.

Ray916MN posted this link in a prior thread, Motorcycle Shipping Costs | Motorcycle Shipping Prices. I'm not sure that would be our first option since they apparently put a $300 surcharge on delivery's to/from Long Island.

Uship.com pops up a lot in google searches, but I'm not sure I want to deal with auction services.

Anyway, any input from those that have done this before is much appreciated! Thanks!

Right. :) Which is cool that two people recommend them. The part that sucks is this from their website:

> There is an extra charge of $300 for tolls when picking up or delivering to Long Island or Maine.

In an effort to reduce costs, I want to see what some other options might be.

I heard good things as well about keyboard. I used uship and got a well rated shipper.

uShip - The Online Shipping Marketplace - Ship Freight, Furniture, Cars or Moves dont you watch tv?

Your misunderstanding UShip.

I've used there services a half dozen times. Just because someone comes in with a low bid doesn't mean you have to accept it.

Those that bid on your shipment will have feedback, and detail how they ship.

In your case I wouldn't accept anything that wasn't insured, enclosed trailer, and *specializes in motorcycles.

I've never gone with the cheapest bid, but the shipper that will work with my schedule, and has the criteria listed above.

Good luck!:)

Thanks -- good to know. They had quite a large Terms of Service which I decided not to read through. So you're saying if I start an auction there is no requirement to choose anyone if I don't want? I figured I'd get hit with some type of fee.

Read the rules. There are two types of auctions/request to ship I believe. Pick the one that doesn't require an obligation. It's simple, and works great.

I had major reservations before using them, but I can't say enough good things after using them the last couple of years.

I've had good results with UShip myself in the past. Wasn't really concerned about the UShip listing/brokerage service since the shipper you end up getting hooked up with is what really matters. Got plenty of bids at widely varying rates, was able to find one that fit my wants and then check out their feedback from others who'd used them, etc. End result was getting a bike delivered cross-country in perfect shape for a great rate.
