scared about this matter when i go to pick up my 13 model in a week. ill keep a good check on it but does it really only drink oil during break in? or are peoples still using alot after! none of my bikes have used heaps during break in nor after! had 3 s1000s, r1s,cbrs, all new too! dont wanna have to buy oil all the time -_- hjopefully the 13 models are ok!

im new owner myself

did some reseach
reason for drinking so much oil is the piston / valves are HUGE

so sealing them is a issue when you are breaking in your bike
ether hard or soft both have different effect

if you go soft expect to pay a lil more oil for time being until sealed
but long run it should stop drinking. as it would seal sooner or later.

just be glad you dont have a 2stroke bike lol

It will chew oil in run in so be careful and keep an eye on it, mine was almost bone dry after 180kms....once you get over 1000kms you will be fine

Btw mine is a 2013

Just keep an eye on it every 200 Kms during initial break-in (1000Kms).
If you need to top up when it gets to the bottom line of the sight glass. I think its about 200-250 Ml to fill it back up to the top line.
Make certain you are toping up with 10w-40 oil (not 15w-50).
The thinner oil will assist in achieving oil control, but still provide adequate protection.
However i would try to stick to using the Shell Advance Ultra or the equivalent if possible.

I would suggest that in the event you are still using a fair bit of oil after 1000Kms. It would not be unreasonable to try and run the oil level a little down (possibly half way between the lines on the sight glass and not filled right up), until it settles down.

Regards,
Brad

Mines a 2013 model and used less than 200ml on the whole break in and seems to have settled now halfway between the sight lines. If I top it up it burns to that point and seems to settle again so happy leaving it where it is.

Stable enough that I don't think about it every ride just once a week (use bike daily).

Mine is a 13 as well and I have about 1000 miles on it and haven't added any oil yet. *shrug*

sumthing must be wrong with yours
was it built by honda?

lol.. I think they take their time and build the white ones correctly since they generally go to a more refined clientele. Mine never smoked either.

Could be where you got it from as well. I'll have to see if mine reacts the same.

Just noticed mine was below the low mark. Waiting now for oil to come in the mail before I can ride it. 2012 with 1050 miles

Not a drop from mine, either before the first oil change or after. Now about 2000mi on a '12 base.

go onto the highway as soon as you can and take the engine braking control off and run it up to redline and back down, this will help seat the rings as soon as possible, never had any oil issues on mine or any other engine ive broken in that way for that matter.

I've also had both valve covers leak, keep this in mind if you can't explain the oil consumption.

I've got 2012 "S" which I purchased last May 9, 2012.

Its only drank approx. 4 tablespoons of oil, as I just had to top up a bit at 800kms. Then, when I changed oil/ oil filter at the 1000km Service...never had to add oil again. My last oil change was at 5,000kms which i did myself at home.

My Panigale has 7,285kms already...never needed to add any oil since. I followed proper break-in proceedures...:D

Only problem I have on the Panigale is the DARN HEAT from the exhaust looping under the seat. Philippines is hot and humid...so this is a big issue here.

We are all waiting for the heatshield upgrade.

Ducati changed the design of the piston rings in July of 2012. The late model 2012 bikes and all new 2013 bikes have the new piston rings. The changed design has been implemented to help minimize oil consumption (and the smoking caused by it). Spoke to a representative of Ducati North America who explained this to me and he stated they went with a thinner piston ring originally due to their pure racing heritage. A thinner ring will yield a very slight (almost immeasurable) horsepower increase - this is the same logic used by professional MX racers who use single ring pistons in their race bikes. However they reacted to the complaints of people with smoking and oil consuming bikes and are now utilizing a thicker ring and have since not heard any complaints of either smoking or excessive oil consumption.

I have owned my 1199 base for 8 months or so and it has not used a drop of oil so far. AC
