Just fitted the GPS and DDA to my bike and I know it can cause dead batteries, but my question is, do you need to physically disconnect it or will turning or off from the dash stop the battery drain?

Pretty sure you need to disconnect it or it will drain your battery.
I disconnect mine.
Although I've only used it once.

This is a known fact to Ducati.

All dealers got an email bulletin to inform customers to remove the USB DDA stick when not in use.

DITTO! We have had to replace two batteries because they went down beyond recharging!!! DO NOT LEAVE IT PLUGGED IN WHEN THE BIKE IS GOING TO BE SITTING!

I had to replace 2 batteries, then the dealer researched it and had me pull the DDA+ out from the bike. No problems now.

Dealer said that regardless of the bike having key out of ignition, the DDA still communicates with satellites.

Makes sense, as it takes awhile to acquire them. If you are at the track, you wouldn't want to wait, after you start the bike, for the acquisitions.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but just disconnect from the rear seat area?

Just thought I'd chime in for fun, Remove the dongle from under the seat. I too have had to replace the battery after draining the life from it!

This is crazy. A GPS receiver searching for signals from inside a garage is going to draw a huge amount of current with absolutely no benefit. That this circuit would be closed when the ignition is off makes no sense at all. I'm not saying it wasn't done that way; I'm just saying it makes no sense.

It actually does - because this is for track use. It it critical to it's operation, that when you start the bike and race down the track, it has already acquired the signals.

That plug is not just for the dda. It's the main can bus connection for the bike. Up maps , down, tuning ECG are all through that plug. So 12v is constantly available there. Ducati just happens to use the can bus connection for data for their dda dongle. ( and power).

If you want to - you / could/ remake the plug to just use the can high and low pins (left two of connector) and draw power from the tail light there (left side if rear tail piece that is ignition switched) but I imagine no one is going to go to that trouble.
