Display Fogging

I didnt think it was even legal nowadays to install a speedo that indicates lower-than-actual miles for the vehicle.

Every other vehicle that I know of stores the info in the ECM and changing the speedo has no effect on it. Leave it up to the Italians to come up with a "better way of doing it"!

I can see many scams in the future when these bikes are being sold used.

New odometers are put in vehicles all the time. Nothing "illegal" about it. It's gonna show on service records, saftey inspections and registrations if this has occured.

I have the receipt showing what my mileage was before the odometer swap and will be open about it, if I ever sell the bike.. and by just checking service records for a particular VIN, you can easily tell what the actual mileage is and if it's had a new ECU installed.

Pretty difficult to be "scammed" if you are somewhat intelligent about what you are buying.

Just an update on my display fogging.

My dealer was initially reluctant to replace the display as they believed this was a common issue with previous Ducati models and not something that Ducati UK would cover under warranty. This seems to be at odds Ducati North America where problem displays have been replaced with no questions asked.

For my part I also thought that replacing one display for another with the exact same problem wasn't a fix, especially given the odometer reset and incorrect service interval display.

However, to be fair to my dealer they subsequently rang me back and said they were going to replace the display under warranty because my display had a "D" suffix and new bikes coming from the factory are now getting an "E" suffix display. This was good because by this point the display had some ugly looking water marks on the inside of the glass.

Anyway the display was replaced and then the current batch of crap weather arrived in the UK meaning the bike hasn't been ridden for the last two weeks. Yesterday there was a break in the weather and I managed to get out for 90 minutes, only to have the new display fog up 15 minutes into the ride. There was no visible condensation beads like before and no strange behaviour from the gear indicator, but the large lozenge shaped foggy area was back in the middle of the display. I fear it's only a matter of time before this display goes the way of the previous one.

Looks like it's a design flaw with the display itself and the E suffix is probably a minor revision with the electronics. Going to go back to my dealer, but I don't know where we go from here. My Triumph Daytona is stored with the Panigale and has no such issues.

I have a new dash on the way...I have a left switch gear issue.e.g., turn signals dont work, horn button, trip meter malfunction and fogging issues.

Fogging issue happens on a hot humid day....Darn dash problem! Hope it doesn't happen twice when new dash is replaced.

I heard of dash issues even with the replacement dash installed!

Sorry to about your dash issues. I admit I store my Pani in my house but I have ridden in the rain on a few occasions and even had to leave it outside while raining when I was on a road trip and haven't had these issues. I didn't get mine until Sep 2012 maybe they have new displays that have fixed the problem?

Hmmm ... mine has had the same fogging/misting up and whilst it eventually goes away in the sun, it's not exactly useful whilst misted up (ahem - sorry officer couldn't see the speed for fogging :) ).

The bit that seems more worrying to me is the gear indicator flicker......

After chatting to Paddockstand and hearing about the worrying situation where the bike took off when the display flicked into N, I noticed that the gear indicator in my display also flickers.

I took the bike back to the dealers at the end of November, probably hadn't ridden for a month, went to start her up and when I switched on, the gear indicator flickered away to itself between N-1-N-2-N for quite a while. The thing is, with the stand down, the bike refused to start, thinking that I was in 1st gear with the stand down and it took a good few minutes of clutch in, stand up, flickering display before it would start and eventually settle down. I then rode for 45 miles with no problems and it didn't happen anymore when returning from the dealer.

I decided to check once more last night (the bike hasn't moved since I took it to the dealer - the roads are just way way to wet round my way :( ), so I just turned it on, and the pumps primed etc and the gear indicator sat there flickering away to itself, between N-1-N-2-N etc etc I've taken some video of the flicker and I'm going to try to run a very gentle heater nearby the screen (i.e. low heat hairdryer) for a while and then turn it on after getting it all warmed up. Again, I'll take some video. I'll also try with just air flowing around the back, again video to see what happens. The bike is in a cold, but dry garage, but obviously with all this water around, it's affecting the display.

I did check the gear linkage sensor (in case that got damp etc) when doing the test and I could select gears correctly (without the engine running) and the gear indicator would show the correct gear. But it would still flicker away every so often, so I'm swayed more towards the display being the problem rather than the gear selector sensor.

I can't say I like the idea of getting the display replaced under warranty when the mileage is reset to zero etc, and I am interested to hear more from PaddockStand on whether or not his replacement display has really cured the problem of flicking into N.

Interestingly, I picked up on another forum, ducati-superbikes.com, from a chap called HarmonyJim, that a Ducati technician told him that the back of the display is open to allow the temperature sensor to work correctly. This would make sense and explain why the display would fog up, although does that mean that the electronics aren't sealed inside??

If the condensation is indeed causing electrical shorting on the internal ECU board, then that is a bigger problem, perhaps the model distinction that paddockstand mentioned, D to E, deals with that problem but would still need to leave the casing open to allow the temp sensor to work and therefore fogging to still occur..

But that would also mean that my theory of gently warming up with a hairdryer and then testing it again might not be a worthwhile test for me as my bike is a July model and most likely got the slightly older D model display. :(

Hi All,

Did a little bit more testing tonight. Firstly, I took some video last night and sure enough the gear indicator flickered between N-2-N-2 etc, if I then put it into a gear, the indicator remained steady in the respective gear, but take it out of gear and the indicator would flicker as before. Interestingly, the green N light to the left of the display remains solid with no visible sign of a flicker.

Tonight, 24 hours later, I ran a hairdryer on gentle setting for 1 hour, the display fogged up as expected and the gear indicator flickered as before and when I selected a gear it remained steady.

So, I then turned off the hairdryer and left it for another hour and when I went back to it, the display was still fogged up, but when I turned it on, the gear indicator remained solid on N, selected a gear and the indicator showed the correct gear and when I put it back into neutral the display remained on N.

It's not conclusive, but with the heat of the dryer, it cures the flicker, not the fogging, but as per my last posting, it seems that the back is open for the temperature sensor.

Would be interested to see what happens to PaddockStand's new display regarding the gear indicator - when it stops raining of course :)

ciao

I have the same problem with the fogging but not with any flickering of the gear indicator, dependant on the weather conditions the fog will sometimes clear during the ride, but mostly seeing as the air is cold and damp it remains, i dont remember having any issues with it during the summer with warmer air,Its a pain and to be honest i wouldnt expect this off a bike i paid so much money for!
Im going in to Ducati soon and i will be mentioning it to them to see whats reccommended, however i wouldnt not be happy to have it replaced if it throws out the milage and service intervals, as has already been said surely this cant be legal??
