Hmmm ... mine has had the same fogging/misting up and whilst it eventually goes away in the sun, it's not exactly useful whilst misted up (ahem - sorry officer couldn't see the speed for fogging
).
The bit that seems more worrying to me is the gear indicator flicker......
After chatting to Paddockstand and hearing about the worrying situation where the bike took off when the display flicked into N, I noticed that the gear indicator in my display also flickers.
I took the bike back to the dealers at the end of November, probably hadn't ridden for a month, went to start her up and when I switched on, the gear indicator flickered away to itself between N-1-N-2-N for quite a while. The thing is, with the stand down, the bike refused to start, thinking that I was in 1st gear with the stand down and it took a good few minutes of clutch in, stand up, flickering display before it would start and eventually settle down. I then rode for 45 miles with no problems and it didn't happen anymore when returning from the dealer.
I decided to check once more last night (the bike hasn't moved since I took it to the dealer - the roads are just way way to wet round my way
), so I just turned it on, and the pumps primed etc and the gear indicator sat there flickering away to itself, between N-1-N-2-N etc etc I've taken some video of the flicker and I'm going to try to run a very gentle heater nearby the screen (i.e. low heat hairdryer) for a while and then turn it on after getting it all warmed up. Again, I'll take some video. I'll also try with just air flowing around the back, again video to see what happens. The bike is in a cold, but dry garage, but obviously with all this water around, it's affecting the display.
I did check the gear linkage sensor (in case that got damp etc) when doing the test and I could select gears correctly (without the engine running) and the gear indicator would show the correct gear. But it would still flicker away every so often, so I'm swayed more towards the display being the problem rather than the gear selector sensor.
I can't say I like the idea of getting the display replaced under warranty when the mileage is reset to zero etc, and I am interested to hear more from PaddockStand on whether or not his replacement display has really cured the problem of flicking into N.
Interestingly, I picked up on another forum,
ducati-superbikes.com, from a chap called HarmonyJim, that a Ducati technician told him that the back of the display is open to allow the temperature sensor to work correctly. This would make sense and explain why the display would fog up, although does that mean that the electronics aren't sealed inside??
If the condensation is indeed causing electrical shorting on the internal ECU board, then that is a bigger problem, perhaps the model distinction that paddockstand mentioned, D to E, deals with that problem but would still need to leave the casing open to allow the temp sensor to work and therefore fogging to still occur..
But that would also mean that my theory of gently warming up with a hairdryer and then testing it again might not be a worthwhile test for me as my bike is a July model and most likely got the slightly older D model display.
