I ride with a guy that has a 1199 with the stock pipes..bike has around 3500 miles on it.. (I have Termis which will become relevant in a moment) .. when I look at his pipes I see that they are not aging well.. the matt finish is becoming tarnished and they just generally look "old".. so I 'm wondering if the stock pipes are regarded by Ducati as just something to get the bike out of the showroom but that every buyer is expected by Ducati to swap these out..presumably for Termis in the mind of Ducati??? My termis have been on around 1500 and look great...... I am not trying to stir the whole exhaust pot here but I am surprised just how poor these pipes are looking...or is he just an exception???

I dont think its exception. My pipes are looking old and almost rusted look. Perhaps I get a aftermarket exhaust later on.

just discoloring from the heat, you can always use scotchbrite and polish to clean them up a bit. Just with the location, and contact with rain, road elements, they can get a bit tatty.

No surprise and not unexpected; besides chromed header pipes, I've never seen a beautiful set of oem/standard exhaust headers on lower priced bikes (relatively speaking). If you want better you basically need to pay for it. The normal tarnishing doesn't bug me, it just is what it is....normal.

Are you talking about a brown or black buildup around the exit ports on the pipe or something on the brushed aluminum covers on the sides? My past 2 sets of termis would get these heat deposits like Chris mentions around the tips (cans were carbon fiber, tips titanium) and I would scrub them with an old kitchen scrubber and simple green and they would look like new.

I am talking about the brushed aluminium .. the exit ports are just sooty...

The simple green and scrubber should knock out the soot - I wonder if he can do that to the brushed aluminum covers as well? Mine still look pretty new (only 1200 miles) so I haven't had to clean them yet.

+1 "what he said" - you could also go for that new Titanium Akrapovic for some sheer beauty, you'll probably wipe it down after each ride :)

Mine look new too. But if they get one speck of dirt on 'em, I'm buying a new exhaust, and then another, and so on. I so will not tolerate my exhaust looking anything but new.

I guess you didn't read my original post... I'm good....

...ohhhh, i read it......i'm just offering what i feel would be a pleasant solution to anyone even thinking about exhaust systems......(even if your Termignoni pipes look great)

Well Im vested....$4000 is way beyond me for a set of pipes....

I think this is an interesting observation (OP).

Mine is shy of 3,000mi and I'll take a look.

I don't recall noticing them looking bad. But they are down low where the tires can kick up a lot of debris... I don't have a bike with termi's to regularly compare to, so maybe its just that I don't have something to reflect how badly they are aging.

I'm happy with them though. Only thing I'd swap them out for is the Austin Racing ones. But they are a bit loud for my neighbors...

Honestly though, when I bought this bike, I was very happy not to have to replace the exhaust just to get it to run, and I actually think the stock cans look as good as the termi's.

Well please understand I am not a Termi advocate in particular and I do believe they are too expensive...but the finish on the slips is way better than the stock as its Titanium and seems much more resistant to what ever challenges these pipes face..ie Heat, road grime water etc etc.... Except for GillesR6 who seems to be having severe issues with his..:(

it definitely runs with the stock pipes, and they may indeed look great to you and the others, but any improvement in the mapping/fueling (via Termi ECU, re-flashed ECUs, etc) will make it run much, much better. then again, maybe some won't appreciate such and will prefer the bike in its stock form. sorry if this is slightly off topic.

I got 4000 miles on mine and the stock exhaust looks fine. Be careful what you use to clean them. Many cleaning products will react with aluminum turning it a whitish color or cause stains. I use water and an SOS pad.

burned chain grease on my left exhaust top of tips, haven't tried to clean off black/brownish burn stains yet. Don't mind it though, can't expect the bike to be showroom clean if ridden.

Not arguing with you....but Termis wipe clean... whilst they are overpriced the fact they clean so readily is a huge plus for me....
