What engine temperatures are you guys registering when riding in cold weather?

I was riding (cruising at highway speeds) recently in temperatures around 45-55 degrees F, and my engine temperature was around 145-147 F (never went below 145). When the air temperature rose to around 60 F, the engine temperature would come up to around 150-155 F.

I am curious because I am not sure what exactly the thermostat regulating temp is in this bike, and I would like to verify that other members are experiencing the same temperatures when riding in similar conditions.

Bottom line I want to make sure my thermostat is not stuck open!

Thanks!

Yo,

Not worrying, but I am curious if other riders are getting the same engine temps. I have had a few R1's, and rarely did they get below 165, unless it was ultra cold!

What engine temps are you guys experiencing in the cold weather?

Sounds about the the same temps I was getting in those conditions, as long as I was moving. If I got stuck going slow 3(30 mph or less) for extended periods it did make it over 200f.

Typical to the 1199. It can be improved to more normal temperatures. Here in holland a large number of owners are upgrading to a bigger radiator. But on the otherhand a number of racers have installed different exhausts (like ZARD) in combination with bigger air inlets. This reduced the cooling water also to more normal levels.
The air flow through the radiators is very influenced by the stuff that's behind them. Installing a bellypan does disturb the flow through the lower radiator e.g.

So do we have our first member whose concerned about bike running too cold???:D

I thought we got the model with the standard option of the seat warmer and thigh roaster

cool engine temps

Valid question, Fastech.

I put 73,000 plus on my CBR 954 RR and saw a consistent 180 F. I rode year round, from temps in the 20s with frost on my seat to the 110 F NorCal saunas. Never saw it much lower than 174 F and rarely saw it much higher than 190 F (when at speed).

The 1199 is a completely different story. Like you said, 140s in cool weather and like jyli19 said, around 200 in the heat. Don't have an explanation, but for some real data, I invoke the name AntiHero, who has put more miles on his bike than many of the forum members combined. :p

Despite the lower engine temps on the 30 something degree days, I find myself singing, Glory, Hallelujah, thank you, Jesus, for those built-in thigh warmers.Keeps a man toasty even when it's chili.

And don't you mind the gentle prodding and playful banter of our illustrious forum members. If you don't get any such posts, recheck the address bar and make sure you're still on the Ducati1199 forum.:D

Takes about 30sec in the parking to trigger the cooling fan. you're right this bike, doesn't regulate temp well. I do find the bike run better cold than hot.

Thanks for the info guys!!!

Like I said, not worried, but I wanted to make sure this was normal to this machine, and that my thermostat isn't stuck open! .....

Sounds like it is normal !!!

Hey Rocdoc, thanks for the PM. Putting in those miles meant riding in fairly extreme temps, so I've seen it all. 130s are the lowest constant temps I've seen, low/mid 220s the highest.

While we're on the subject of figures, 27 mpg is on the low side of street riding (teens on the track) and 50 mpg was the highest constant average (over ~20 miles or so on flat ground).

1199 puts out a lot of heat. Bike has large two part radiator to compensate. More would we be better in the summer. Less radiators in winter. Maybe it's a balance?

That's what I think anyways. I would cover part of the radiator for cold riding to keep temps around 170 if you run it hard. This is close to normal operating temp. Although this is probably unnecessary if temps over 140.

I don't know any of this for sure. Just my thoughts.

Air-temp = 28-31degC , Cruising 100km/h express-way, ECT = 75 - 80degC
Air temp = 28-31degC, Urban traffic, ECT = 90-100degC
ECT> 100degC = Fan kicks in.

Somewhat the same engine temps as what we get here in the Philippines...
Though I seem to notice, that my fan kicks in when it hits 103C.
