Had Rossi pitted earlier, Lorenzo would have followed him in and they both would have left the pits at the same time on slicks. Because Rossi stayed out, Lorenzo pitted and pushed too hard on the slicks trying to quickly catch Rossi. Rossi's "bad decision" to stay out on the wets led to Lorenzo's bad decision to try to make up too much time too early once he got back on slicks and ultimately gave Rossi a bigger points lead.

That's a bit of a stretch, and not how Rossi or Lorenzo saw it either. They both said it was a mistake to stay out. Good analysis from David Emmett at MotoMatters:

Looking back it's easy to say it was a mistake to stay out because we now know it didn't rain again. Either way, if Rossi did pit earlier and Lorenzo followed him in the best he could've hoped for was a win and Lorenzo 3rd. The mistake to stay out led to Lorenzo's DNF. It turned out to be the best "mistake" Rossi has made all season.

Can Marquez still win the championship if Lorenzo and Rossi crashed out in the next 5 races?
If Rossi and Lorenzo both crash in the next two races and Marquez wins both, Marquez will lead Lorenzo by 10 points and trail Rossi by 14 points. That would make for a VERY entertaining rest of the season.

Marquez CAN win it. But it's unlikely. And I sure hope I didn't just totally jinx Rossi.

It definitely worked out for him, no argument there. But it was pure luck (hand of God, per the thread of course! ;)), not any master stroke of tactics. Not requiring of hindsight either; even their teams were imploring them via pit board to come in for laps before they did. I'd say if they had radios, Jarvis would have had them in post haste because the guys who weren't having to ride the bikes could easily see everyone's splits and knew that anyone who pitted earlier was going to beat the ones who stayed out on used-up wets. I was sure talking to the TV myself wondering why they were staying out. Marquez, to his credit recognized the situation first, came in with 10 to go and went 15 seconds a lap faster on slicks. For 10 laps, that's putting well over a full lap on anyone on the wets.

Gambling on a crash from the smoothest guy on track is always gonna offer poor odds, and besides the odds would not have changed if the two Yamahas had pitted earlier.

All in all though, damn good drama and fun to watch. Rest of the season should be highly entertaining!

I still have this weird feeling that something odd is waiting ahead for the last 5 races"¦
I just saw my fortune teller, and she said " it is written, the rose will be held up by the whore at the mark""¦..
"¦.wonder what that means:confused:

My prediction is Rossi wins championship #10 this year then retires a champion.

there is a small rumor floating around that Stoner may come back on a ducati....very small rumor however now that ducati is owned by audi (no more bad history) and Stoner has a very good relationship with Audi, only time will tell......
