Well, long story short, I got to upgrade to an 1199! It took my R1 getting stolen to upgrade, but I'm happy. Naturally I am still bummed and pissed about the whole situation and with the insurance company trying to give me peanuts for it, but in the end, and exactly 3 months to the day from when it was stolen, I fought to get what I deserved and was able to put a good down payment on a brand new straight from the crate 1199 with ABS.
Having never ridden a bike with ABS or traction control, I'm feeling awesome with all these goodies. The roar is meaner than I was expecting, and I loved the roar of my R1. But this is just nuts. On my rides to work, I always get off with a huge smile on my face, which at the end of the day is what riding is all about for me. And running through the canyons and mountains, you have to pry me to get me off the bike. That or an empty tank.
I've had it now for 2 weeks and I'll be taking it in for the first service tomorrow. I can't wait to really get a feel for this bike.

Congrats and welcome!

Seems there are more than a few of us that went from Crossplane R1's to the Pani, and every one appears as happy with the switch as you are. Here's another new member thread with discussions of the R1 vs. the Pani, my bike included:

This has proven to be the most active and informative 1199 forum. There are a few more "characters" than most forums I've been on and NO moderators, so things can get out of hand quickly. If you sift through all of that, you will find that just about every question you have about Pani ownership has been/can be addressed here. Good luck and have fun!

Was it really stolen or was it "Stolen?" My dad has had several old cars "Stolen" at the most inopportune times.

You seem to have serious trust issue of people you have never met. If the man says, it was stolen...I'll take his word for it...its not like I am his insurance agent.:D

Welcome to the madness buddy!!! I also have a x-plane too but not sure if I want to let it go just yet! Luving the 1199 but I just don't want to get rid any of my toys!

Thanks for the comments guys. Yeah I loved that bike, but I lust after this one. haha. Yeah it was legit stolen. Left the university one evening after studying to find my ignition and bits and pieces of metal in the spot where I had parked it. Totally sucked, and talk about a ...... feeling.
But like I said, I'm all smiles now! I hear ya not wanting to get rid of any toys. I had planned on getting a multistrada after paying off the R1, but once it got stolen I figured I should replace it with another super bike (super duper bike?).
So here is/was the Yamaha, and now the Ducati! Never thought I'd get a chance to own such a machine. Its pretty epic. Thanks again for the welcome and the comments.

Now be careful where you park your new super bike!

yeah no kidding. My buddy who has an older R1 and I are probably going to lock our bikes together on campus and I'm looking at getting some sort of alarm. Do you guys have any suggestions on a good setup?

This through the rear wheel around a light pole?

And I hear the Scorpio alarms are the best.

Cool, I'll check out that lock and I was leaning towards a Scropio and get one with the GPS maybe, so good to know they are top notch. Anything to help prevent what happened to my R1 from happening to my Panigale.

And I'll probably try and park in a better spot too, thought I was in a good spot cuz there was always foot traffic (though not enough in the evening apparently). The crazy part is I was in a designated motorcycle parking lot, in between the two engineering buildings when it was stolen, and after talking with campus police, there is not a single outward facing security camera on the entire campus! I was blown away. Anyhoo, I think I'm going to go for a ride. :D

Congrats on the Duc, for some reason the permanent smile comes with it. :D
Are you ever up on the Crest or Coffee at Dawn?

and in addition the the nyc lock, you may want to consider a Xena front disc lock with built-in alarm.

Heck yeah it sure does. I love the crest, its nice having such a great road in our back yard. I haven't been to the Coffee at Dawn, that's in Cedar Crest on the road up there right?

We have a new Ducatista in the forum. Congratulations.

Thanks, couldn't be happier.

I'll check that out too. Had a disc lock on the R1 (non-alarmed) but that didn't seem to slow them down...much. Oh well. I wonder if I can rig up like a James Bond kind of deterrent system that shocks the crap out of you if you touch. Or maybe flame throwers....haha

Congrats! Where in NM are you. Several here in ABQ. Did you get the Pani at Moto Authority?
