Front tyre wear

Just wondering if some of you tyre/suspension guru's can point me in the right direction to rectify this (possible) problem?

My 2015 1299S has worn out its front tyre well before the rear (first time I've experienced this!). Only road riding - very little commuting (mostly Australian B roads with coarse chip bitumen), no track days. I'm not a hard rider/braker by any means, preferring to surf the torque...

I'm 76-odd kg with gear on, have the suspension in dynamic mode and on my favourite twisty road I usually switch to race mode. No other adjustments made.

I run the front at 34PSI and the rear at 32. I'm not complaining about the tyre life - just wondering why it has worn out before the rear. Photos below may help...

How many miles? Looks like the effect of street riding on a soft "track focused" tire where your pushing the front tire harder than the rear (rolling off throttle before turn (engine break), normal breaking, etc..) and not hard on the rear by not accelerating on the shoulders of the tire. You do have a flat spot on the rear tire it seems also? I no longer run those tires nor ride on the street anymore but I think your pressures are a little high for both tires? Someone will have to chime in on what they are running on spirited street riding.

I live up in the North of Western Australia and run 34 front and 36 rear and managed to squeeze safely 6700kms out of my tyres. Average speeds of around 110!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm, no, the "flat spot" on the rear in the photo is an optical illusion - it has worn quite evenly. Both front and rear have just over 6000km on them which matches the km's goldontop is seeing. But your theory of pushing the front while taking it easy on the rear is a possibility I guess.

However, the Pani is a replacement for a Tuono V4R which had the same Pirelli's and I went through 2 rears for every front over the 4 years I had it (with similar tyre life, riding the same roads)...

I will look at dropping the pressures down to the recommended (owners manual) levels for the new set I'll have put on this month.

Thanks!

Geez, you'd need to run at speed to keep cool on a Pani up there - must be fun having some wide open spaces though and relative lack of enforcement :) (speaking as an ex-Darwin resident (long ago in a previous life...))

Same here, I live in Sydney inner west and on every local ride around my area I have encountered mobile speed cameras! The only time I'm ever above the local road speed limit is in my sleep. lol

Recommended in manual is 31.5 front from memory
I run that

Same thing happens on my 1299S street bike. Since I got it in 2015, i've always worn out the front before the rear. Similar thing happened to my old S1000RR.

I also use the Supercorsa SP's on the road and run 31psi front and 25 rear.

I don't have the same problem with my 1299S trackbike and 1199R race bike although i'm using Pirelli slicks on them.

Also located in Sydney. Should organise a street ride (or track day)...

33.5 front and 30.5 rear according to the manual. My dealer (Frasers) recommended running higher on the road. Think I'll stick to that (a front tyre is a bit less expensive after all [emoji4]).

Ahh, nice to know I'm not the only one! Seems like I might be running too high pressures.

Wish I had the luxury of having another Pani for the track as well! I've gone the other way of having a Scrambler as well for "fun fun" riding as opposed to the 1299S for "serious fun". [emoji3]

I live in the north west so I can almost say the Putty Road is my local - and they've started using mobile camera's on it as well ☹️

Have you guys from Sydney ridden the Bells road up to the Blue Mountains, awesome road. You guys also have Eastern Creek not to far from you, I'm very jealous. My nearest track is 16 hours from here.

My apologies if my fading memory stuffed that up. In my manual I think it is in bar or kpa. Cannot remember. I know I stuffed around converting it couple of years ago. I had better check again. :)
I ended up changing to SC1 front and back. I met Glenn Allerton (ASBK winner) once at a BMW advernture ride day once. I asked him if he had any tips on why I was losing the front end at the track. (Probably my poor riding) Anyway he asked how old my tyre was and at that time it was the original front. He advised me to change out at least once a year for track riding. That was about 2 years ago. SC1 since then. But they do not last long but are very sticky.

Ok, yes, mine is a year old now (I had a spell off the bike for a back op, so didn't put on many k's relatively). I will be replacing it this month for sure.

I did the conversions and keep a table in Evernote for easy reference [emoji851]:

FRONT
PSI 33.4 - 36.2
kPa 230 - 250
Bar 2.30 - 2.50

REAR
PSI 30.5 - 36.2
kPa 210 - 250
Bar 2.10 - 2.50

Lower pressures for rider only.

Maybe I've been running the rear too hard as opposed to the front?

Tyre wear is not just about tyre pressures. Suspension settings play just as if not a more important role.

You might want to check your front preload etc for your weight.

Yeah we are pretty lucky in terms of potential roads! But...

Old Pacific Highway (OPH) = waste of time with a 60kph limit through the best stuff - now THAT sends you to sleep!

Bells Line - yes, very nice, but fairly heavily trafficked with sightseers on weekends (and fairly well policed). For me is it a nice ride on the way to further out west (Oberon area) [emoji3].

Putty Road - still OK at the right times but getting to be like Bells Line only with trucks and horse floats.

Royal National Park - ditto OPH

Macquarie Pass - ditto OPH

Getting to be more and more like track days will be the only way to explore you and your bikes potential - which is probably the right thing I guess. Lucky for me (at the moment) Sydney Motorsport Park (EC) is only 20 minutes away...

Yes, we are fortunate to have Eastern Creek for track days and a few other great riding roads such as Putty Rd, Pacific Hwy, drive through National Park to Wollongong, Galston Rd and Bells Line of Road (as you mentioned), just to name a few but most of them are crawling with traffic during the day. You are better of in the Pilbara with your wide open spaces and light traffic.

Yeah that's what I was thinking as well - I've been kind'f assuming that I'd be pretty close to the "Italian" average weight and that the default should be close enough.

Yeah - you just don't get much cornering practice I guess! [emoji57]
