Gear indicator problems

I saw this same thing the other day on a 70mile trip in 97F ambient. Coolant temps were hovering over 204F most of the time. I knew it was hot as heck, sipping water from my CambelBak while splitting the L.A. traffic to keep airflow. By the time I came to a series of stops and in my garage, it exhibited the N and 1 toggling, but the bike was clearly in neutral and gave no running issues, just the display. So, riding in the high heat may cause this issue to crop up, will the learn procedure described below correct this condition while not creating another one during lower temp riding? Thanks

It fix the problem for me.After the reset and reteach,Blink indicator didnt reappear even at high temperature.

Afternoon all,

I have a problem that is becoming more frequent and before I take it to the dealer I just thought I would ask on here (as I couldn't find anything on this in the search) and see if it is a problem I could sort myself.

The other day I was out and noticed that when I put the bike into neutral the dash didn't know what gear it should be in and flickered quickly between N & 1. The green N light didn't illuminate. When it has happened before I have always been sat on the bike, for example, at a set of traffic lights but yesterday while it was happening I stopped at the side of the road, left the bike running and got off. The rev's then dropped off and the bike cut out. I restarted the bike while it was still on the side stand, it fired up no probs but then the rev's died off again and it cut out. If I have the bike upright the rev's don't drop off. The bike functions normally apart from this. The fault only happens if I've been out for an hour or so. Now I have been very lucky by all accounts with this bike and so far this has been the only real fault I've had.

If anyone can shed some light on this for me it will be greatly appreciated, if not then it looks like I will be off to the dealer.

Cheers :)

I had exactly the same problem. While the bike was warming up, the gear position would flash between one and two. Dealer fixed it by adjusting the sensor at the gear lever. That was over 18 months ago. It has never happened since.

Of course you could follow the advice to leave it overnight in first gear or whatever ........ that was. Or get the "holy grail" software update. That fixes everything and even makes the bike louder. No need for termi or Akra.

I had the same problem and it was the connection point of the battery ground. Eventually the problem got worse with the display doing all sorts of wacky things. Dealer put a washer on the terminal for they could get a tighter connection and problem fixed

Did it again to me today, right when I got back into my garage at end of 70 mile commute :( Seems heat related. I wish I could fix this myself, no time to go to dealer till way later and I have to go on a run tomorrow with my Duc. Maybe I call Westlake Ducati tomorrow morning and see if they'll see me after breakfast. I would cut my bike meet short for that. Bike health comes first

I get this when I'm in 6th gear. I flickers between 5th and 6th on the dash. The only difference is that I recently installed the Rizoma rearsets. Wondering if that can contribute to this issue as I had to adjust the length of the shift rod.

I stopped at a gas station and put it in what I was told was neutral "N" filled up! and went to start the bike with side stand down clutch in gauged and almost launched the bike..

Green "n" is indicating and every thing

I'm just glad it takes the motor 5 to 6 revaluations to start

On every bike I own, I always pull in the clutch when starting the bike regardless of what the dash is telling me. I have an irrational fear of the bike taking off and exploding into a giant ball of flames and taking out an innocent group of kids or kittens. I blame Michael bay movies.

I never thought of that. I was used to it on my GSXR, then stopped on my Pani. Good point.

(Although a group of dead kittens is not a bad thing, the whole fireball thing would be an issue)

NOLA

Didn't do it today but it was much cooler too!

Came back from run, and it did not do it today. Westlake Ducati states it may need a relearn on the gear positions on a dyno. There is a way to do it at speed but requires manipulating the dash while riding so on the dash is the preferred method, takes half an hour- 45 min to perform. Driving on it should be fine. I will have to wait to bring it in. Not sure how it lost its calibration in 5000 miles. Battery is strong as usual and under maintainer when not in use. Must be due to heat/age/ wear-in of components.

I agree.

Heat appears to be a pretty common denominator.

It was not possible for my dealer to fix mine, because they couldn't replicate it.
At least not without having to leave the bike there for an extended time, and they're located 130 kms away:(
It was occurring early on in the production of the 1199 and DUCATI weren't really across it at that stage.
DUCATI's suggested fix seemed to be pretty over the top and involved, so I let it slide and it was never fixed under warranty.

My solution of religiously leaving it parked in 1st gear to cool down whenever I put the bike to bed, worked out perfectly for me anyway.
It was based upon my assumption that it was indeed heat related, and causing something to move out of adjustment due to thermal expansion.
So it has never been a problem since:)

I took mine out for a ride today. When I get into 6th gear, dash stays at 5th. At least I'm less than 700 miles away from my 7,500 mile service. Wonder if they are going to pin the blame on the rearsets as well.

Do I need to wait until the service light comes on or can I take it in for the service now and have them 'reset' the service indicator/counter/whatever?

The service reminder can't be reset until "after" the full service mileage has been reached.
So it can't be reset yet.
The service light will have to change colour before it can be reset.

Good news troops, the bike has finally been booked in at the dealer and they know about this problem. They have ordered new sensors and whatever else they need just in case something is broke (read: they break something!). Also just found out that my bike should've been recalled for the L/H switch wiring loom, I'd have thought I would have been notified by email?? Just while I am on, has anyone else had drama's with the exhaust melting the lower R/H fairing? even though I have had the larger grommet fitted it has still not helped. The shop are now going to relocate the 'hook' (where the spring locates) in order to move it away from the plastic as I already have the new piece of fairing but am reluctant to fit it just now as I know exactly what will happen to it. If you had this problem how did you resolve it?

I actually think I will try the 1st gear thing Brad mentioned, no doubt if its off by that little, then usage patterns can offset the calibration, lazyman's fix for now. I'll let them recal the gear sensor next service. They told me they don't have to be able to replicate it to correct as the calibration process will either correct it or tell them something else is wrong.

Good thing I found this thread instead of creating a duplicate.. I am also having the same issue with the indicator but its only between 1st gear and N where it keeps flashing back and forth at times or when I am in neutral it will show 1 and I need to lift the shifter up a tad bit for the dash to show N and the green light to come on. Have experienced this only when I ride it for a while in hot conditions and engine is also pretty hot. It sure does looks to be heat related as its warmed up rapidly over the last week or two (weather high is in the low 80s now) and never had this issue in the past month since I started riding this year.

When I start the bike in the morning in my garage it shows neutral properly and doesn't act weird at all.

I had taken it to my dealer yesterday and the service guy couldn't find anything to indicate an issue through the DDS system so I am not sure what is up. Hope to have some more info later today to see if I need to have the gear sensor reset or replace it altogether under warranty.

My 'new' dealer (only because he is closer) hasn't even seen my bike yet but they know of this problem. They have ordered in a new sensor already just in case the re-teach doesn't work. Hopefully they just replace the sensor as a matter of course and with any luck that will be job done

Re-teach first, then replace the component as a last resort is standard procedure.

Things are looking up, and at least there's light at the end of the tunnel:)

Dealer just replace gear sensor and reprogrammed gear and throttle, the bike is much smoother, no blinking gear indicator, neutral displays correctly, throttle is smooth with zero lunging at low speeds

:D

That's great news, fingers crossed it stays that way :D

My rocket is in this Wednesday so here's hoping I get the same result

EDIT:

Well the beast is back from the garage and WOW it's like a new machine. They have changed the gear selector sensor, adjusted the clutch (which I didn't ask them to do) put any updates on that were missing and played with the throttle modulation. No more bouncing about while riding in the lower rev range, everything is nice and smooth. They have done some magic with the gearbox as well, all gears just slide in (including neutral when waiting at lights etc). It now works like the precision machine it is. Can't wait for the weekend :D
