Gearing opinions for 520 Chain Conversion

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

hmmmmmmmm and would you change your 520 chain as often as teh gp teams do? I'm guessing every race?

Posts I read on other forums, users of the 520 EVR3 expect to get a whole season out of one.

And yes, Ducati uses 525, not 530. The DID 525 VX is roughly the same tensile as the 520 EVR3, and the 530 VX is only 1100 more (9750).

Bottom line, the 520 conversion is a pretty safe mod for the rotational weight savings.

I think the MTS uses a 530 chain, 1199 an others use 525.

Here's great info from ducati.ms, very timely, don't know who originally posted it:

Actual Weight Savings: 520 Conversion

DID 525 chain, 15/36 gearing converted to a
AFAM lightweight 15 tooth front, DID ERV2 gold x-ring 520 chain and AFAM quick change rear setup with 40 tooth sprocket.

Stock DID 525 chain: 1,810 grams
New DID 520 ERV2 gold chain: 1,520 grams
Result: 520 (100 links) chain is 290 grams lighter

Stock 15 tooth 525 front sprocket: 260 grams
New AFAM lightweight 15 tooth 520 front sprocket: 215 grams
Result: new sprocket is 45 grams lighter

Stock 36 tooth 525 rear sprocket: 975 grams
New AFAM quick change 520 rear, 40 tooth: 650 grams
Result: new rear setup is 325 grams lighter

Stock weight: 3,045 grams
New weight: 2,385 grams
Weight savings: 660 grams (1 lb 7.5 oz)

Awesome! When i get my Ti flange/nuts in, I will post the total weight diff.

I couldn"t be bothered waiting for the quick change kits to come out,so i settled on a Tsubaki Sigma 525, CNC Racing flange and some Ti nuts. All for aesthetics. As that section of the bike was a touch dull lol. I"m well happy. Dont need any different ratios for road,my baby eats tarmac as Ducati intended as she is. Any issues I simply adapt my riding style to suit. got sick and tired of modding bikes thinking it would make me a better rider, when all along it was me that needed work.:D:D:D

I'm using a 520 set up have done on all my race bikes never had a issue .
I am using a 15/41 but will try a 15/40 set up for bigger tracks .

Hi .... Ring . How's things .
I was actually running a 15/ 42 last time I raced it was perfect gave me great acceleration out of corners but a ...... to launch . I had to work for it more as well had to change gears more often .
On the street it should be OK .

I accidentally (ordered the wrong front) ran a 14/41 for a couple of weeks last month. Fun to ride, but gears were really short and constantly having to change gear. Now fitted the 15, so running 15/41, which is perfect.

AFAM 520 conversion with DID ZVM-X chain.

Good for you Mr Ring . I hope you like it .

Just what I ws thinking. Why risk breaking a chain on a 195 hp bit of machinery? Wonder what a new Panigale crankcase costs when you break it with a flailing or wadded chain?

Racing? Absolutely, as there is a significant weight savings involved (my racer runs a 428 chain on custom sprockets) and they receive more regular maintenance under closer scrutiny (at least on my bikes).

530 chain is about 25% stronger than 520 if memory serves correctly.

1199 stock is 525

i also run the 15/41 520 conversion with a did zvm x chain. however you will have NO problems with the erv chain in any way shape or form.

you guys serious with thinking the 520 will break? or just like to post dumb stuff. name one person you know that had their 520 chain break because of too much power and not your friends brothers friends uncles friend either

Raced 520 all season. Zero issues. We also saw zero issues with the S1krr and the HP4. I ran a 14/39 on tight tracks and 14/38 everywhere else. Liked the 14/38 best.

15/41 here. Stayed with the 525 pitch. 520 converison was less than a pound difference. I prefer the extra strength of the 525 over the 520, but I do agree there is no real concern over using 520.
