heat

I just got back from a night ride. Mostly highway speeds and temp 85. Bike temp ran around 180. On the way back temp was 82 and bike temp was running in the high 160's.

This heat was barely noticeable. Any bike temp above 200 for a extended period of time is going to roast your legs.

LOL - thanks for sharing but I have to laugh -certainly not at your "wounds" - but rather at the face peering out from between your legs.

:D

I had to hide my junk and get that in the mirror. Not a pretty sight, but all in the name of science. I tried a few other ways, none showed how one was good and the other was red.

I picked up my bike 3 days ago. It was the hottest day here 92 - 93F. The bike was up to 225F. From what I can tell when creeping along in rush hour traffic up to 45mph air is hitting the exhaust and shield under the seat causing a turbulent roll of the airstream. With the super narrow seat cowl the hot turbulant air is rolling up under each side of the seat area and hitting the bottom of our legs. Essentially the exhaust and shield is acting as an radiator/heat exchanger. Great for cold mornings, but hell to pay on summer days.

Thinking outloud of a heat shield that fits over the current exhaust header to direct the turbulent air through channels (or fins) farther back without letting the majority of it roll up under the rider like the current design.

The current header design is lacking in my opinion. I understand they need a specific equal length headers, but it could have been designed differently. With that said this is a race bike for all intended purposes. They may not have experienced many or any issues like this if most of their testing was done on a track. When I got above 50mph this reduced the effect of low speed turbulant air moving over/past hot parts. The bike was much more enjoyable to ride.

I would like to see the aftermarket folks come up with a totally different exhaust header design. It would also be nice if they let the exhaust exit the cans more towards the ground naturally not inline with the rear tire. The current design feet/ankles are nearly inline with the hot exhaust as it exits the can.

Still I love the bike. Every time I look at it I'm in awe. When I ride it nothing like my older Japenese bikes. The sound, the torque and the soul as they say of Ducati. Funny how everyone is saying they the Panigale "lost torque" in the lower revs. The older Ducatis you must be able to pull tree stumps out of the ground! It great for me since this is my first Ducati.

For all of you in the US have a great/safe Memorial day holiday. For those around the world be safe and enjoy the weekend!

LOL
im just glad you didnt post junk and all !!

i have riden 300km some city and some hwy, has been warm but geepers not to the burning point
i have been riding in kevlar Dragon jeans with a liner in them ?

I just got my bike today and rode 150 miles home, mostly back road 35-55 posted mph.
Outside temperature was high 80's at the start and low 80's at the end of the ride. Bike was 170-215 F.

I was wearing full leathers and bike put out an incredible amount of heat on the upper rear of my right leg. So much so, I had light burn area after I was finished riding home. Felt like a hair dryer blowing on the back inner thigh. Holding the leg out didn't do much to lower the temperature. Going 80+ mph helped. Under that was just incredibly hot. I can't believe this is normal.

Chris

Sorry for the burns man but the face is cracking me up

Would you guys say this bike is more uncomfortable heat wise than say, an 06 R1? That bastard got hot!!

I'm wondering if having the termi pipes make a temp difference?

No difference. If anything the full Termi system is worse. They even include heat reflectors with insulation for the fuel tank bottom and the ECU in the tail section. Ducati should have also included some insulation for our thighs. 15 minutes of 20 mph traffic after a hot run today and resorted to standing up on the pegs for 10-15 seconds to let things cool off.

The heat is not an issue at any speed above 50..

Add another excuse: "Sorry officer, I had to do 50 though that 30 zone to relieve the heat form my race exhust which was roasting my thighs" .. Oh crap, never mind.

it can't be worse than my 996 with the pipe running beside your leg. My RSV4 pours heat on the right leg.

Neither come close to the Panigale, with the full Termi system is sub 30 mph traffic on a hot day. I even looked down expecting to see the bike on fire!

it can get incredibly hot, especially when cruising... i think i will try 3 things:
1. make a shield for the rear cylinder head
2. design a spoiler/air channel to the rear under tail as a heat shield/guide
3. somehow chill the seat...

Comparing to my 1198, it seems the heat is about the same, but heats evenly on the right and left (ass/ thighs) where my 1198 roasted the right thigh.
I have a full Termi which was put on prior to picking the bike up, so can't speak to stock VS slip-on VS full system.
Regardless, did a lot of traffic stuff today and never came close to cooking body parts....

I'd be very interested to hear if anyone has a got a view on the heat with the slip on or the full system vs the stock?.... Im still trying to decide which one to buy, the carbon heat shield provided with the full system might be less effective than the steel one perhaps ???

I've found that it helps to stick your knees out into the breeze. You may look like a klutz but it sure helps reduce the heat...

good lord. How can anyone be happy with that? Just one of those things you live with?

Hell, if the full system is worse then I might reconsider having it installed. I have paid for it to be installed at my first service but I don't need anymore heat that whats being generated now.

If moving the heat is no problem. Once stopped or in slow traffic and the engine temp gets above 200 it becomes a real problem.

Wow!!! Just picked up my Base w/ABS today and had to ride in 95 deg heat with high humidity and it toasted my legs doing 65 and 70 down the highway. Then I had to slow down to 40 mph in city traffic for a couple of miles. Thought I was going to die especially my left leg. From what I could tell is the shock directs the heat on the left side straight up to your thigh. The right leg still gets some heat but the left is a killer. I thought the 999 I traded in was hot but this is way worse.

Just want to follow-up and say the bike is really fantastic and the heat is just a weird issue. I say worse on right then left, others the opposite. I find it best to manage from the beginning of the ride. It hasnt' been as much of a problem since the first ride. I have been wearing jeans, so I think the loose fitting jeans allow it to be cooler on my leg.

It would also matter how tall and how each person sits.

I am 5'10" and sit all the way forward. 32" inseam. I don't find the upper radiator heat bothering my knees at all. I do find the rear cylinder radiating the most bothersome heat, especially right side.

Chris

I think I'm going to have to hold off. The main reason I sold my 06 R1 was because of the heat. I guess Ducati just wants you to wear leathers all the time. Do you think this is something that is correctable?
