SO for the short version... does leaving the key in the ignition overnight (turned off) kill the battery?

long story...

My side stand sensor died, ducati says none in the country.. two month wait from Italy (wtfff)

so i decided to try bypass, turns out ducati got smarter now requires a 5v to 1.2v drop to cancel the warning on the dash.

Bought a resistance wheel, and found that 1k ohm resistor is perfect to remove the side stand warning light.

Installed 1k ohm resistor removed sensor etc so its just at the plug.

Go to start bike.... nothing, just a weird click noise and when i do it for more than a few seconds i get some crazy warnings, battery is one of them, but sometimes have had unknown device, and can bus error...

i checked all fuses, nothing blown. Volts on battery is 11.6

cheers

No, Leaving the key in the ignition turned off will not kill the battery. When I am at the track I do that.

The rest of it test the voltage going to the starter. Clicking usually means starter.

alright so i just tried it on the charger for 30 mins, kicked over (as opposed to clicking noise) and started, but died after about 5 seconds...

battery was showing 12v when started, after it died was 11.4v so I'm guessing it must be the battery correct?

I tend to leave my key in my bike a lot (when i get home from the track the bike goes in the garage, key in it, under the cover) I have no issues with that. Also, i bought the kick stand delete plug and have used that with great success for my 2013 1199.

My keys live in the ignition and never an issue. Your symptoms point to a bad battery, but no question that today's electronics can be a pain in the ... to troubleshoot. But I would put my money on the battery. Also consider that your jumper could be causing something weird to happen. But you sound like you have pretty good skills.

CLIK CLICK CLICK Screen going wonky, multiple faults.

Battery internal failure, or lack of charge. When starter load is aplied to battery it's voltage drops and everything electronic dies. Can be bad for the ECM.

I believe leaving the key in may cause a battery drain. The red security light goes off in 12 hours i believe when the key is not detected. But when the key or RFID chip is detected the light keeps blinking or so i was told by Ducati tech a long time ago. Im not 100% sure because i never leave the key in.

If you need a sidestand sensor let me know.... No clue on cost there but have one i can send out for cheap.

I leave my key in the ignition and have let the bike sit for at least 2 weeks.. 2012 1199S original battery no battery tender, no issues for starting.

So this morning, battery says 12.5V, tried to start, doesn't click, but will just try and kick over as if no spark or fuel etc.

tried push starting... but then i remembered thats probably not going to work with the slipper... and it did not lol.

Sort of chugged but never really started. Will go buy a new battery today.

Thanks for the offer, i found one on eBay US last night... $27.... plus $50 for express shipping (crikey). Lo and behold, they'll be getting a refund request if the shipping label on the tiny package it will require is anything less than $40.

Brand new one from Ducati was $93 apparently, but up to 2 months shipping.

Ok guys, so update.... new battery in, started first try...

I don't want to jump to conclusions, but the chance of the old battery dying and the kickstand sensor dying on the same day is rare surely... and the only thing i did differently last night was accidentally leave my key in the ignition.

Leaving the key in the ignition has no effect. The blinking red light stops in 12 hours regardles of it being there or not, and all the other systems shut down so long as it is in the Off position.

I keep my bike in my living room. The only time I ever remove the key is when I stop for lunch when out riding.

Go back and read my post above. My bike is over two and a half years old and the only time the key is ever out of the ignition is when I'm putting gas in it. And the bike has been known to sit for several weeks at a time. Zero problems with the battery.

Agreed.

I leave the key in all of my bikes all the time, never had an issue (as long as it is in the OFF position).

Maybe your kickstand sensor was going bad/grounded, and this burned your battery. The kickstand sensor wires can sit on top of the exhaust if you do not deliberately keep it away with zipties.
