Help with decision making before purchase

If you want the 1299R, you'll have to find a dealer who has an allocation. It is a limited production that may have stopped. There won't be anymore after that. A 2016 or 2017 1199R will be easier to get and you can probably pick one up for 30K or less; MSRP is around 35-36K. If you get one, do yourself and your family a favor and ride it on the track. You can't appreciate these bikes fully on the street; if you tried, you greatly increase the risk of getting seriously hurt or killed if the cops haven't already put you in jail and impounded the bike. Grim stats include a lot of older riders that tried to pick up where they left off long ago in their young days. Get a demo ride on any Panigale first.

I've had bikes from 1989 till 2016, covered over 150K miles on that time riding them, used to race WERA and CCS. I know my limits by now.

This would be my first purchase of a Ducati, and I'm trying to understand the basics of the following....

What is the difference between a 1299 R and a 1299s? Also the sales rep was talking to me about electronic suspension for an extra $5,000... Is it worth it? And how does it work?

Lastly, would you go with 2017 or wait it out for the 2018 model? I've owned two bikes GSXR 750 and a ZX6RR.

Any help would truly be appreciated. Wife gave me a thumbs up to do whatever I want. So it's either a 911 or a 1299. In my 50s and not sure if I'm losing my mind, mid life crisis or what. :)

Buy the car. Looks like you know nothing about the Ducati. I wish I had a 911. Or an M4, or a Mustang, or a 458 Italia. Still have my passport to motoring luxury the 1999 Toyoto Camry.

Local dealer has a 2016 H2 as well. That’s another possibility just for the madness of owning a supercharged bike. But the Ducati is a bucket list item so it still might win out. Depends on what kind of deal I get.

Not much Ducati love here!

It’s the end of year and riding season here so I’ll see what deals they want to do. I’m not financing so it’s give them a check and out the door. Ducati is offering up 1200 worth of accessories right now on them. Thst should get me a few things.

Heck, even my wife said to purchase both

Full Stop!

Get the 911, and does it really matter which Ducati you buy? Listen to your wife, she certainly won't know or care which one you buy.

By the way you do know there are 22 trim levels of the 911.

Hi everyone that posted and commented.
I apologize for the delayed response. I came down
with the flu and just now starting to get my energy back.
I still have not made up my mind but intending to do so
very soon. 911 or Ducati...

How can you compare the two? Price and performance between the two are different leagues. Maybe Ducati vs Aprila. 911 vs M4. 911 is a cruiser unless you get a GT3.

The 1299S is an amazing street bike, the electronic suspension giving you the ability to swap between a cushy setup and a track setup is awesome. The engine makes a mountain of torque and is easy to ride around town, you won't regret it.

The Panigale R is a street legal racebike, no electronic suspension, no LED headlight, just a stripped down bike with 1199SL engine internals. It revs faster, and is more in edge. The best way to compare them, the 1299S is like using a sledgehammer and the R is like using a scalpel.

Hahahahaaaa....that's the silliest thing I've read on this entire forum. No offense, but what specifically makes you say that? The analogy itself is even a bit odd.

The 911 is pricey to kept running properly. If you can do your own work the costs come down. You will need a Durametric tool to reset codes and do other things. I just had my 40K service done on my 911 at the dealer and it cost me 2200. That a 4 year major service. The yearly service is about 700 at the dealer. Things do go wrong on them and if it does, that can be pricey too. I had a coolant leak that cost 3200 to repair, but I had the good'ole Carmax Warranty that paid it all except for the deductible. The warranty cost me 2K at purchase. So I'm ahead already. As for mods, once again can be pricey. Balance that all out as you decide. It cost 110K when new, and the maintaince costs don't go down because of age. Then again I bought it for 50K, and I could sell it tomorrow for 55K. If you really want one, get a solid 996 version if you don't have the funds for a 997.1 or 997.2, and forget about the air cooled ones.

I’ve owned both of them, put a ton of miles on them and drew my conclusions. The 1299S to me was more forgiving, the suspension was softer and you could make a mistake and use the torque of the engine to bail you out if you were in the wrong gear. If you got it wrong you could easily make up for it. Hence the sledgehammer.

The R made you work for it, with your experience and skill of you rode it right it would reward you. Less forgiving and more in your face. Hence the scalpel.

I like the sledgehammer - easier to use! But I have two scalpels...hmmf; I don't think I need anymore of those.

You will never get on the list for a GT2 RS and if you did expect major ADM. Most will be bought and never driven, just like the R and the 4.0RS. It's a shame but true.
