how many of you are using back protector while riding on street

The surgeons said all of my gear saved my live, and saved my back, spine and head from permanent neurological damage. I hope one person who reads this that doesn't wear gear every ride will change, i wasn't on the bike for 30 seconds when i got hit.

I had to learn my lesson the hard way. I had number get offs in full gear that I walked and/or crawled away from with no major injuries.

15 years ago I had just got done working on an older FZ600 that I was going to flip to make a couple of bucks. I figured "What the hell...I'm only running through the industrial park for this test ride". Luckily I tossed a helmet and gloves on. I got all the way through the park and was slowing for a stop sign when everything went black. I don't remember a ....... thing. Even today. I remember a couple of buddies asking me if I was alright. They came looking for me when I didn't come back right away. What happened?

I hit a patch/puddle of freshly spilled antifreeze. Someone yaked it out of their car right before the stop sign. It was dark out so I never saw it. To this day I have nasty scars all over my arms, elbows, knees and shins. I was only going 40 or so that I remember.

I'll never go without again....

BTW,I lost that entire week from my memory. I was building a new garage and had no idea how I had got that far.

Oh and the fun part about being in a hospital in Beverly Hills is my medical bills are already over $1,000,000. My insurance is paying for nearly everything but i still have quite a bit of out of pocket expense.

Don't get me wrong, Im alive and the money is secondary, but this person that hit me gets to go on as if nothing happened

I would probably be dead or worse, right now.[/QUOTE]

That made me lol at first, what could be worse than dead right? Then I thought about it, and there are lots of things worse than dead! Good reply man!

That's good to hear,
The old adage is defo sound advice, better to be safe than sorry, wear a back protector

I have a back and chest protector that I wear at all times... street, track, backroads... AGATT! I spent more money on gear than mods. I figured that's a far better investment.

And...... the best helmet you can afford, and the best gloves and boots etc.

saved my life..... Big Time

in the South, riding gear is worn less often than it should. It's hot and humid, and it's more culturally acceptable to ride squid. In Korea, where I started riding, they're so money and fashion conscious that they will wear pricey Dainese leathers any time of year, hot or cold, on or off the bike lol. They do it for status but the flip side is that they're better protected.

A friend of mine died early this summer; severe back trauma. He survived in the ICU for a few days before he succumbed. He thought he had "back protection" - but it was a cheap-ass jacket with literally a piece of FOAM in the back. He probably would have made it if he had a real back protector.

I have a full array of riding gear, but when it's 95 out with a blazing sun, I do have to make calculated compromises. I have a perforated Dainese jacket/pant combo, but I've gotten dizzy from heat exhaustion in traffic before. So....
- the non-negotiable is the nervous system. Helmet and back protector, always.
- I have comfortable pants with good knee armor, so that always gets worn too.
- I have full gauntlet track gloves, but I use "city" gloves that breathe great. Won't do a damned thing for my fingers or wrists in a bad crash, but they're comfortable enough that I'll wear them always (Alpinestars SMX-2 air carbon gloves)
- I have two different pairs of Dainese track boots, but in the heat of the summer I use Dainese Asphalt C2B shoes. They won't protect against ankle injury, but they do come up high enough to provide decent protection for the bones there in a slide. They breathe very, very well!

but emphasis on helmet and back protector. skin grafts are painful and bones can take a long time to heal and may never gain full mobility. But you can't fix damage to your spinal cord and of course your brain. I'd wear a Leatt brace if they weren't so damned uncomfortable on a sportbike.

My Alpinestars mesh jacket (Bionic 2 Protection jacket) has zero slide resistance (unless it's on one of the numerous plastic-covered plates) and does have a chest protector.

But when the weather cools to where I can wear leather, I don't wear a chest protector. Maybe I should? I think if I understood exactly what it's protecting and how, it might encourage me.

Is it to mitigate broken ribs? Or to prevent catastrophic chest impacts that would rupture and otherwise destroy organs?

I watch a LOT of motorcycle racing, and it seems that the paddock is split between those who wear them and those who don't....?

Multiple reasons but the big one in my view is that it doesn't actually take too much of hit to the chest to cause an instant heart stoppage. Here and there you hear of little league players who take a ball to the chest and it hits in just the right phase of the heart contraction to cause a fatal arrythmia.

I wear it in the hope that it will prevent collapsed lungs.

An acquaintance was killed that way last year. Rear ended a van, Got up walking/talking fine. Collapsed a minute later and gave up the ghost.

Man after reading about gear and all your story about ppl getting hurt... scares me =( I don't have gear only helmet and glove.... I love riding but the gear cost so much
