You will get there soon enough I'm sure. Just slow down and experiment.
Get those eyes up though, it makes everything seem slower. I know it seems odd to have your head down near the curbing, but you shouldn't actually be looking at it directly, just in the peripherals of your vision. It comes with practice, the first few times I worked on it spooked me out too. As you relax, it becomes more natural. The other thing you will notice is everything simply slows down and becomes less fatiguing the more you use your body to work with the bike. I work on this constantly, despite being in pretty good athletic shape, riding was tiring me out a lot quicker than it should. It was all due to tensing up too much and fighting my own body everywhere.
In regards to the general philosophy of weight placement, I forget which instructor said this to me, but it has remained in my mind ever since. "What do you think makes more of a difference to the bike, a couple of clicks on some adjustors or the 200+ pounds of human on top of it that's upsetting it?"
