I've been talking about it for years, but I'm finally ready to start hitting the track. I recently did the California Superbike School and it was a blast of course, and I knew it would turn into an itch I needed to scratch.

I live in Los Angeles, so if anyone has any recommendations for where to go, my ears are open. I'm a complete track newbie.

I have a 1299S I would like to just convert over to a track bike, afterwards, I'll buy a new V4S and just street that.

What do I need to know to make my 1299 track ready? I have all the riding gear covered for myself, so this is a bike list primarily. I have a set of nice tire warmers already, but I'll pick up a small generator if I need one.

Plastics? Another wheel set? Safety wire stuff? Mirrors off? Hit me with it! (side note, chain has a little surface rust staining from a few times I was stuck in the rain, so I may need a new chain as well)

Clean the chain and adjust if needed and do basic maintenance, take the stuff off you don't need for the track, you may not need an extra set of wheels if you use treaded tyres they maybe ok in rain and dry, your only starting out so may be able to get away with stock fairings etc. take tools take your time and get into instruction guys local to you will chime in for sure, oh and don't forget have fun and have a level head :)

The 1299 is a track bike at heart, so you dont need to do much. I you plan on racing you have to do safety wire etc, but for track days I don't think most organizations require it. Most important thing is to keep good tires on the bike, every crash I had at the track was usually on old worn out tires. That's where you need to spend most of your money imo, not on fancy upgrades to the bike.

Fiberglass race fairings, safety wire on a few important things like drain plug and caliper bolts etc, and go ride! These bikes are really great out of the gate especially the 1299. As you get faster look into some possible suspension work or upgrades. See if there is a trackside suspension guru you can build a relationship with. Possibly an aftermarket brake master if you find the brake feel is not consistent. With those couple mods that machine will leave you room to grow for years. A tune can help a lot with fueling and smoothing out the power delivery among other more in depth things depending on what type of tuning software you go with.

If you find you are not comfortable you might want to do things like adjustable rearsets and clip ons. Lots of riders get a taller seat like the DP race seat.

Lucky to be in LA you can track year round. If you really love track riding you should join a club like CVMA and get your novice race license. Lots of fun and youll really push yourself to get better faster.

100% in agreement. To add would be good rubber but warm rubber. always always warm them up first. 1st lap at 60%, 2nd lap at 70%...every session!!
