I could give a **** how the bike does in WSBK or whatever... winner or loser..to me its irrelevant...

IMHO, it's still got lots of issues compared to the competition. If having a bike that works and doesn't always need leaks fixed, melted pieces replaced, clutch lever ziptied to the bar overnight (lol), etc. sounds boring then I guess I'm a boring kinda guy. :p

I'd definitely pick an up an extended warranty if I were you though. Keeping it past 24 months without one is like playing Russian roulette with more than the regulation one round in the cylinder.

Eric.. I did say earlier that I cannot defend the record of this bike in the hands of some owners... I am myself a happy 1199 owner... But the HP4 is an awesome machine itself... and anyone that buys one will be very happy I am sure...

I have several friends who have S1000's ..... 2 have crashed and one had a battery die out on a ride...

I hear the Titanic was pretty nice too. Teak decking, good food.. pride of the White Star line. ;)

That's why I quoted Capt CF instead of starting my post with "Hey Stw lemme tell ya about the Pani in WSBK!" ;)

Though I still feel the same about my bike despite how they do in WSBK as well.

Mark,

If I had your problems I'd be frustrated as well and probably shopping other brands. I've ridden the BMW RR and liked it a lot but just couldn't own one with that face :(.

Going back to the OP, bummer you've had those issues Mark. I consider myself lucky as I've only had melted fairings on the Tri and zero issues with the base. (knock on wood).

I consider my HP4 "better" in terms of a race only bike but not by a large margin and now that I have an R coming maybe not at all. S1K's have had their issues and shouldn't be considered synonymous with the HP4 IMO.

The key difference between the HP4 to the Duc is initial setup....get the Duc setup right, which is a ..... tbh, and it'll rip on street and track. HP4 was pretty damn good right out of the crate but then takes a lot of tweaking at full pace.

As an overall street and track bike though, I prefer the Duc.

Ahh the old hindsight is 20/20. I speak to a lot of 1199 owners on here and in person privately and I get the same reaction. The forum just masks excuses for Ducati cause people don't want to admit a 20k mistake but I'll be totally honest here and admit the 1199 was my biggest purchase mistake and the experience will keep me from ever purchasing a Ducati again. I have had old heat shield problems, new heat shield problems, a melting fairing, a melting rear hugger, bolts fly off, rear set swing arm problem ( although that is an aftermarket purchase), signal issue and paint problem. I have the bike since June 2012. Problem is in the first 2 years you can't get rid of the bike you lose too much.

The reaction to every person I ask is the same a wincing like pain reaction. What do you think of the bike. I get well and a face like you have stomach cramps saying its good but....

I am also a member of the s1000rr forum. I can tell you these complaints are not really posted. Neither are they on the r1 forum. I know it happens to all makes but nothing is like it is with the 1199. I think what could have been if Ducati actually thought things through. With the most amazing looking bike yet you have to spend 30k to get the kind of performance the base should have. Keep in mind you can get an hp4 for 20k which will stay with an r anytime and is the price of a base with a full system and it's a titanium full akra exhaust system far and a way better quality than termi.

This is what the 1199 should have been and the reviews it should get.

2013 BMW HP4 Onboard Video Review

I know this will get blasted but the next time you have a dash problem bolt problem or an oil leak or your decision is what to do about an extended warranty or it takes you 3 hours to change the oil and coolant remember this post.

All good points man. I can't really say I think the 1199 is a better looking bike next to my HP4. That paint scheme and those wheels, its a looker for sure. People complain about the front of the S1KRR but let me ask you this. EVERYONE although they make fun of it KNOWS that front end is from a S1KRR. Maybe thats a marketing genius plan, BMW didn't want to be like everyone else and tbh they are not and their bikes are crushing the competition.

People ask me all the time what I think is better and deep down in my heart I know the BMW is 10x the motorcycle. Fit and finish is no comparison. People talk about the Ducati soul well maybe thats true but lately maybe I think its my imagination making me think that when I get on the 1199. I'm having a ton of false netural problems on my 1199, I'm on my second fairing(like come on really ducati?), and lately its been hard starting. I don't even ride it. My thought is should I have paid 20k for a bike and then had to 1.) Replace the rearseats the stock is GARBAGE, 2.) The seat GARBAGE, 3.) Yes the heat is a big thing that would keep me from wanting to ride it in the summer, 4.) Really does ducati need to make it that much of pain to change from F to P? Seriously. I read about everyone's problems and think this is what I have to look forward to from actually wanting to ride it? Not really confidence inspiring.

When I picked up my HP4 I was super excited. When I first sat on it the seat is COMFY and grippy. Nice there. Ergonomics are great very comfortable to be on for a long distance. Granted I have a competition edition so the adjustable rear sets are a nice touch. The bike comes with Full Akra like mentioned talk about a value. Also have you seen the amount of carbon fiber on the comp edition??? Again Value, oh and not to forget the heated grips. :D. The DDC is absolutely amazing the bike just seems to have no limit when I'm riding it, comfortable and always giving me the best setup possible for whatever situation I am in. I could go on and on but i'd be repeating what is already in the reviews. I went through the same roads I always ride with the HP4 and I was out riding the panigale for sure. In a straight line I'm also sure the HP4 would outrun the panigale. The quicker shifter on the HP4 is just amazing just wow. The panigle's feels clunky in comparison. Its truly a bike I bought, drove home and was so happy with the way that it was I didn't want to change a thing other than a fender eliminator.

At this point not sure how many miles I'd ever want to put on the 1199. Thinking about selling it in for another S1KRR for the track, but there is something about it that makes me hold on to it. Maybe the cost of the damn thing but there is something about the roaring twin when you start it up.

Maybe I'm crazy but aside from the Ducati I believe the s1000rr looks the sickest and I love the headlights

I'll agree with that. The front is very distinctive and will not be mistaken for anything else, like it or not. Personally, I'm just on the 'not' side.

Great review of both from someone who has both. I hate people that comment and never had experience with the other

My biggest gripe is when I ride to see gunny Shawn or J I have to worry if the bike will make it there and back

I have had many Ducati's with zero issues I must have been lucky . The biggest issue I have had with any bike has been the BMW S1000RR which was the reason I went back to Ducati's .
Good luck with the BMW I hope nothing goes wrong as the way that BMW approach warranty claims is mind boggling .

Zero issues with the 1199 as well. Ironically, this is the first bike I’ve owned where my enjoyment easily supersedes any anxiety I have of potential issues arising. I am more than willing to put up with any nuances that may come because I appreciate the experience this bike provides and know there is not another bike out there that can duplicate what it does for me.

I recently had an opportunity to put a couple hundred miles on an S1KRR and, while there were definitely some nice elements to it, it simply didn’t evoke that visceral feeling I crave when on two wheels. Except under WOT runs, I found the sound completely bland and the overall experience to be quite mechanical, if not sterile. Those can be great features in a car where predictability and efficiency are key, but when riding I simply demand more.
